Gyokeres only arrived last summer from Sporting in a £55 million deal and hit 21 goals in all competitions. For many clubs, that would be enough to build around. Arsenal see it differently.
The feeling inside the Emirates is that, to go one step further in Europe and defend their Premier League crown, they need a different profile of striker. A finisher who can live off scraps, drag big games their way and punish elite defences with minimal service.
According to Spanish outlet Diario Sport, that need has pushed Arsenal towards a dramatic proposal. The report claims the reigning Premier League champions have put a swap offer on the table: Gyokeres plus £68.5 million in exchange for Alvarez.
It would mean cutting ties with the Sweden international after just a single season. A ruthless call, but one that underlines how highly Arteta and the club hierarchy rate the former Manchester City forward.
Barcelona dream vs Atletico reality
Alvarez has made no secret that Barcelona is his preferred next destination. That is the move he wants. The problem lies in Spain, not England.
Atletico Madrid have no interest in strengthening a direct LaLiga rival and are reluctant to sell to Barcelona at all. On top of that, Barca’s financial issues make a £100m-plus deal extremely complicated, even if they could eventually put a package together.
That stand-off leaves a gap for Arsenal to drive through. Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has already revealed that talks over a possible deal have taken place in London, and the latest reports in Spain suggest those discussions have escalated.
Diario Sport report that Alvarez’s “head has turned towards Emirates Stadium”, with Atletico’s stance on Barcelona nudging him towards north London. Financially, there is no obstacle on Arsenal’s side. Alvarez is expected to double his wages if an agreement is reached, and Atletico would receive a major fee plus a proven international striker in return.
For a club that prides itself on smart squad building, Arsenal are effectively betting that one elite No.9 is worth more than a prolific but less complete one.
‘That little bit of magic up front’
On the pitch, Arsenal have started with a swagger. A 3-0 win over Coventry in their Premier League opener on Friday night underlined the strength of Arteta’s current squad. Yet even in a comfortable victory, the conversation quickly turned to what Alvarez could add.

“They’d become not just Premier League title winners, but you’re then thinking that they can go that extra step and win the Champions League as well.
“He does need that little bit of magic up front that when you don’t play well they’ll go and win a big game for you.
“Has he got enough of that? I’m not sure.”
Neville’s question hangs over the entire pursuit. Alvarez has already shown flashes of that match-winning edge at Manchester City and now Atletico, but leading the line as the undisputed No.9 for a club with Arsenal’s ambitions is a different examination altogether.

For now, the clock is the other opponent. The final days of the summer window are approaching, and Arsenal are trying to pull off a complex deal involving a major fee, a high-profile player exchange and a forward who has long eyed another club.
Gyokeres, for his part, finds himself in a brutal illustration of modern elite football: 21 goals, one season, and still potentially expendable if the right superstar becomes available.
