Arsenal Signs Teen Star Andria Bartishvili for Future Success

Arsenal have beaten Liverpool to the signature of one of Europe’s brightest teenagers – and they won’t see him in their first team for almost three years.

The Premier League champions have wrapped up a deal for 17-year-old Georgian attacking midfielder Andria Bartishvili, a player both Arsenal and Liverpool pushed hard to land over the summer. Liverpool put a contract on the table. Arsenal closed the deal.

Arsenal plan for 2027 while ripping up their forward line

The timing is striking. In the space of a few days, Arsenal have moved out four forwards and attacking options: Ethan Nwaneri to Borussia Dortmund on loan, Gabriel Jesus to Barcelona in a £12m deal including add-ons, Gabriel Martinelli to Al-Hilal for £60m, and Fabio Vieira to Hamburg for £8.6m.

None of them have been directly replaced. Yet Mikel Arteta still oversees a squad many around the league regard as the benchmark, both in quality and depth. Rivals might quibble over individual positions, but the broader picture is clear: Arsenal look built to dominate the present.

Liverpool, by contrast, still boast several world-class starters who would walk into Arteta’s XI. The problem sits beneath that surface. The depth is thin, the rotation options limited, and belief on Merseyside that they can realistically chase down Arsenal over a full title race is scarce.

Arsenal sense their window. And they’re not just trying to own the next nine months. They are already reaching into the next era.

Romano’s ‘here we go’ and a long-term play

On August 29, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano dropped his trademark confirmation: Bartishvili to Arsenal, “here we go.”

He reported that Arsenal had agreed a deal to sign the 17-year-old from Georgian side Geo Team, with a medical booked in London and a five-year contract waiting. The fee is understood to be worth €4.5m.

The twist: Bartishvili will not join Arsenal’s first team until the summer of 2027, when he turns 18. The structure is clear – sign early, secure the talent, then wait.

Romano later confirmed the teenager was travelling to London to complete the formalities and undergo his medical. That process is now done.

On Friday morning, Romano delivered the final update: medical completed, contract ready, deal “formally sealed.” In his words, “Georgian talent Andria Bartishvili can be considered a new Arsenal player. Bartishvili will join #AFC first team in summer 2027 when he turns 18.”

Liverpool miss out as Arsenal think years ahead

For Liverpool, this is a sting. They identified the same player, made their pitch, and lost out to the very club they are trying to reel in at the top of the table. It underlines the current power dynamic: Arsenal can sell established forwards, invest in prime-age stars like Ezri Konsa and Bruno Guimaraes, and still stash away a highly rated teenager for 2027.

For Arsenal, Bartishvili is not about tomorrow’s team sheet. He is another piece in a longer plan – a bet that when the next cycle of this squad turns over, they will already have the next wave in-house.

If this is what their succession planning looks like in 2024, what will the champions be building by the time Bartishvili actually walks into London Colney in 2027?
