Arsenal Pursues Liverpool Star Vincent Joseph for Academy Boost
Arsenal are closing in on the signing of highly rated Liverpool forward Vincent Joseph, underlining a renewed, aggressive drive to stock their academy with elite young talent.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal have reached an agreement with the England youth international after he chose not to sign scholarship terms at Anfield this summer, following the expiry of his schoolboy registration. The move has opened the door for the Gunners, who have moved quickly.
Talks between Arsenal and Liverpool are ongoing over a compensation package for the 16-year-old striker. Because Joseph is under 24 and never signed a professional deal at Anfield, any failure to agree a fee will see the matter go to a tribunal.
Arsenal clearly feel he is worth the fight. Joseph has been prolific for England’s under-16s, scoring eight goals in nine appearances, and he has already dipped his toe into under-18 football with Liverpool, hitting three goals in just two games in the under-18 Premier League last season. It is the kind of output that makes big clubs pay attention.
This pursuit slots neatly into a wider pattern. Arsenal have been quietly but relentlessly targeting some of the most promising teenagers in the UK and beyond, and this summer has only reinforced that strategy.
They have already beaten Liverpool to the signature of teenage goalkeeper Phoenix Blayney, another statement of intent at academy level. Blayney’s father, Alan, revealed earlier in the summer that the framework of the move is already in place.
“Everything has been agreed with Arsenal, he just needs to sign the contract,” he told the Belfast Telegraph. “When he’s 17, he will sign a professional contract. It’s done and dusted and a pre-contract will be signed when the time is right.”
The expectation is that Blayney will link up with Arsenal this summer on a pre-contract arrangement, before signing professional terms when he turns 17 in November 2027. It is a long-term play, but Arsenal are clearly thinking years, not months, ahead.
And they are not stopping there.
Arsenal are also set to wrap up a deal for Cardiff City prospect Axel Donczew. The youngster already has a small slice of history: he became Cardiff’s youngest ever first-team player when he made his debut against Newport County in the EFL Trophy on October 25, at just 15 years and 234 days old.
