Arsenal Sign Gibraltar Winger James Scanlon as Youth Rebuild Accelerates

Arsenal are set to prise highly rated teenager James Scanlon away from Manchester United as their aggressive academy rebuild gathers momentum.

The 19-year-old winger, on United’s books since 2021, is expected to join the Gunners on a free transfer, with a hefty 40 per cent sell-on clause written into the deal. He has already completed his medical and the two clubs are expected to sign off the move within the next 48 hours.

This is not a signing for the loan carousel. Arsenal have no immediate plans to send Scanlon out. He will start with the Under-21s, but the message around the move is clear: he is arriving with the intention of forcing his way into Mikel Arteta’s first-team thinking as quickly as he can.

Scanlon’s profile is unusual for an academy recruit. At 19, he already has 24 senior caps for Gibraltar, experience that has sharpened interest in him across Europe, particularly in Spain. Sevilla pushed hard to sign him permanently in January, only for United to block the move and send him to Swindon Town on loan for the second half of last season instead.

At Arsenal, there are influential voices who know exactly what they are getting. New Under-21 head coach David Horseman worked briefly with Scanlon at United and strongly recommended him to the club’s hierarchy. Positive reports have also come from Chris Perkins, who oversaw academy recruitment at Derby County when Scanlon was progressing through their youth ranks before his switch to Old Trafford.

Scanlon becomes the latest to make the direct journey from United to north London. He will follow defender Habeeb Ogunneye, another free-transfer capture from Old Trafford with a significant sell-on clause attached.

This is part of a clear shift in strategy. Arsenal have sharpened their focus on strengthening the Under-21 group, aiming to raise both the quality and the competitiveness of that level to create a more direct pathway to Arteta’s senior squad.

That intent has already been underlined this week. On Tuesday, 18-year-old striker Igor Tyjon confirmed he is leaving Blackburn Rovers after Arsenal finally secured his signature.

The talent pipeline at London Colney is being rebuilt piece by piece. Scanlon is the next one through the door.
