Arsenal's Pursuit of Victor Osimhen: Pay Cut Required
Arsenal have drawn a hard line in their pursuit of Victor Osimhen: take a pay cut, or the move to the Emirates is off.
The North London club are pushing to bring in the Galatasaray striker before the transfer window shuts, with Mikel Arteta intent on adding a ruthless finisher to a squad that fell just short in the title race last season. Osimhen is the man they want. His salary is the problem.
Arsenal’s stance: big ambition, strict limits
FootMercato report that Arsenal have already held direct talks over a deal for the Nigeria international, but the negotiations have hit a clear financial ceiling. The club are refusing to offer what they see as an excessive contract, and any agreement now rests on Osimhen’s willingness to lower his demands.
At Galatasaray, the 27-year-old earns more than €20 million (£17.1m) per year. Arsenal are not prepared to match that. For a club that has tightened its wage structure in recent years, ripping it up for one player would be a major step backwards.
The message to Osimhen is blunt: if you want the move, you’ll have to compromise.
A market of closed doors
Arsenal’s push for Osimhen comes after frustration elsewhere. Arteta had targeted Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, but the Spanish club refused to sell, and the player is understood to favour a switch to Barcelona over a return to the Premier League.
That setback has only sharpened Arsenal’s focus on Osimhen, yet he is no easier to prise away.
Galatasaray president Dursun Ozbek has been adamant that the striker is not for sale. The Turkish champions backed up that stance earlier this month by rejecting a €130 million (£111m) bid from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, a figure that underlines just how highly they value their No. 9.
Al-Hilal, rebuffed in their pursuit of Osimhen, then moved for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins. Their latest offer, around £45 million, was also turned down. Elite forwards, it seems, are staying exactly where they are unless truly extraordinary money is put on the table.
Osimhen delivers while the noise grows
Through all of this, Osimhen has simply kept scoring.
He struck twice and laid on an assist in Galatasaray’s 4-0 win away to Erzurumspor on Friday, a performance that showcased the full range of his threat: movement in behind, power in the box, and composure when it matters. That came on the back of another brace in a 2-2 draw with Corum FK.
He is not playing like a man distracted. He is playing like the focal point of a team defending its title.
For now, he remains exactly that. Galatasaray expect him to continue leading the line as they chase more silverware, while Arsenal wait for an answer that could reshape their season.
