Arsenal are quietly circling as Atletico Madrid and Barcelona tear into each other over Julián Álvarez – and the Premier League champions sense this row might yet deliver them a world-class No 9.
What started as a straightforward chase for one of Europe’s most coveted forwards has turned into a full-blown political storm in Spain. Arsenal, watching from a distance, believe the chaos could be their way in.
Arsenal’s opening
The London club remain firmly in the race for Álvarez, fully aware of the enormous financial outlay it would take. The fee could climb to around €150 million, a figure that would test even the most powerful budgets.
Yet for Arsenal, the biggest challenge is not Atlético Madrid. It is the player himself.
Álvarez is settled in Spain. He has become a father there, his family is comfortable, and his life off the pitch is stable. He knows England well from his Manchester City spell and has no particular desire to return to a country he already left once.
Arsenal are trying to change his mind with two weapons: the project and the pay packet.
A project built to tempt a striker
On the sporting side, the pitch is clear. Arsenal can now show hard evidence of their rise: Premier League champions, Champions League finalists, a squad that looks built to compete for every major trophy.
Mikel Arteta has constructed a side that plays front-foot, attacking football. For a forward of Álvarez’s instincts, that matters.
At Atlético, he often finds himself dragged into long defensive shifts, starting counters from deep, miles from the opposition box. It is functional, disciplined, and demanding. But it is not always fun for a striker who thrives close to goal.
In an Arsenal side that dominates territory and the ball, his numbers and influence would be expected to jump. That is the footballing promise on the table.
The money on offer
Then comes the financial argument.
Arsenal are prepared to offer a salary in line with the top earners in Europe. If Álvarez walks away from his dream move to Barcelona, it will only be for a contract that reflects that sacrifice.
His demands to return to England would be significantly higher than anything he would seek to stay in La Liga. Arsenal know that, and they are ready to go into that bracket if they get the slightest encouragement from the player’s camp.
Even so, the deal remains hugely complex from every angle. But if the Barcelona path truly closes, Álvarez may find the English door is the only one left open.
Barcelona and Atlético at war
For now, the transfer is being played out against a backdrop of open hostility between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, Atlético’s general manager, has launched a blistering attack on the Catalan club, accusing Barcelona of “falseness” and of moving behind Atlético’s back to contact Álvarez.
Barcelona hit back. Vice-president Rafael Yuste claimed Atlético had “crossed the red line”, while president Joan Laporta insisted the club had acted transparently, pointing to a €100 million offer they say still stands.
Atlético are unconvinced. They believe Barcelona have not negotiated in good faith and are furious at what they see as an attempt to unsettle their star.
The tension is obvious. The two clubs are now locked in a public dispute that has only made the deal harder to complete.
Barça’s only option up front
Despite the mess, Barcelona have not shut the door on Álvarez. Laporta has made that clear: the file is not closed, even if the path is steep.
For Barça, this is not just another name on a list. Álvarez is their only remaining option for the centre-forward role after they discarded other possibilities, including Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez.
That makes the standoff even more dramatic. Barcelona need a striker. Atlético do not want to sell to a direct rival. And in the background, Arsenal wait.
Arsenal’s patience
The London club are not rushing. They know the market does not shut until midnight on 1 September. Time is on their side.
If the feud between Atlético and Barcelona deepens, if the Catalan club fail to find a breakthrough, if Álvarez starts to see England as the only viable escape route from this tug of war, Arsenal will be ready with their sporting project and their cheque book.
Right now, the saga belongs to Spain. But the final twist could yet lead Álvarez back to the Premier League.
