Arsenal Pursues Brighton's Jack Hinshelwood as Top Target
Arsenal have already spent the summer acting like champions. Now they’re moving for one of the Premier League’s most intriguing young midfielders.
According to a report from The Sun, Arsenal are pushing hard to sign Brighton talent Jack Hinshelwood and are currently ahead of Manchester United and Manchester City in the race. The 21-year-old, valued at between £43m and £51m, has been marked out as a “top priority” target by the North London club.

Mikel Arteta has not stood still since ending the club’s 22-year wait for a Premier League title. The squad that finally climbed back to the summit has already been reinforced with Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie and Illan Meslier.
Yet the rebuild isn’t being treated as complete. Arsenal still want a centre-back, a winger and possibly a striker. Now, a new name has moved close to the top of the list.
Hinshelwood offers something different. Brighton developed him as a defensive midfielder, but Roberto De Zerbi and then his successors used him higher up the pitch as well. He responded with four goals and four assists in the league last season, a return that underlined both his versatility and his composure in the final third.
Arteta is said to view him as the “perfect addition” to a midfield that already includes Declan Rice and Guimaraes. A player who can sit, press, or break lines with late runs. A plug-in piece for multiple systems.
Brighton’s stance and the price of potential
Brighton rarely sell cheaply, and this situation is no different.
Hinshelwood, son of former Brighton player Adam Hinshelwood, has three years left on his contract. That puts the Seagulls in a strong position, and the report states they would prefer to keep their academy graduate.
But every Brighton player has a price. The suggestion is that an offer in the £43m–£51m range could bring them to the table.
Arsenal are not alone in circling. Manchester United and Manchester City are both credited with interest, yet the London club are described as “leading” the chase at this stage. For a 21-year-old with one standout Premier League season, that fee reflects both risk and upside. Arsenal seem prepared to lean into the upside.
Centre-back hunt hits resistance
While the Hinshelwood pursuit gathers pace, Arsenal’s search for a centre-back has met more resistance.
Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa has been heavily linked and, on Friday, one report went as far as to claim a deal was “99% done”. That line has not been backed up elsewhere.
Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano moved to cool that talk in his latest YouTube update, stressing that Konsa remains only on Arsenal’s shortlist and is simply “very appreciated” by the club. Admired, yes. Agreed, no.
Arsenal have explored alternatives, but they are discovering how hard it is to prise away first-choice defenders in this market.
Romano made it clear that Atletico Madrid’s Marc Pubill is not an option. “The player is not for sale. Atletico Madrid have no intention to sell,” he reported.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah has also been shut down. Romano revealed that Arsenal made official contact with the German champions, only to be rebuffed: Leverkusen “don’t want to sell the player” and have rejected the approach.
So the picture is split. At centre-back, doors are closing. In midfield, one seems to be opening.
Arsenal have already spent like a club intent on staying at the top. If they now outmanoeuvre both Manchester giants for Hinshelwood, it will say plenty about where players believe their futures are brightest – and how aggressively the champions intend to defend their crown.
