Argentina Stages Stunning Comeback; Switzerland Wins on Penalties to Reach Quarter-Finals

Argentina faced a daunting challenge after falling two goals behind to Egypt in Atlanta, but they rallied late to secure a spot in the World Cup quarter-finals. The match saw an early strike from Yasser Ibrahim, who headed in a corner kick at the 15-minute mark, catching the reigning champions off guard.

Lionel Messi was given a chance to equalize soon after when Nico Tagliafico was fouled in the penalty area. However, Egypt's goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir anticipated correctly and stopped the penalty. Egypt nearly doubled their lead in the second half with Mostafa Ziko finishing a swift counter-attack, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul on Lisandro Martinez caught by VAR.

Ziko found redemption moments later by scoring again on another counter-attack that stood firm. Up until then, Argentina had struggled to create chances, but the last 20 minutes belonged to them. Cristian Romero finally got them back in the game with a header off a Messi cross at 79 minutes. Messi, now 39, quickly leveled with a powerful shot after the ball broke free, leaving Shobeir helpless.

With extra time looming, Lautaro Martinez delivered a precise cross that Enzo Fernandez converted with a header, completing Argentina’s remarkable comeback. Emotions ran high as Messi was seen shedding tears after the final whistle. Despite expectations of an easier path, Argentina have faced tough tests against Cape Verde and Egypt, producing thrilling matches beyond predictions.

Switzerland Prevails Over Colombia in Penalty Shootout

The encounter between Switzerland and Colombia in Vancouver lacked the intensity of Argentina’s drama, unfolding as a cautious match where both teams seemed to expect penalties early on. Colombia generated more scoring chances, especially in extra time where they outshot the Swiss 8-1, but failed to find the net.

The shootout saw former Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez hit the crossbar, giving Switzerland the advantage. Manuel Akanji then missed his penalty by shooting over the bar, but Colombia couldn’t capitalize either. Juan Hernandez’s effort was saved by Gregor Kobel, while Cedric Itten and Luis Diaz exchanged successful attempts. Ruben Vargas ultimately converted the winning penalty for Switzerland, securing their place in the quarter-finals under coach Murat Yakin.
