Anthony Martial Set for Málaga Lifeline
Anthony Martial is closing in on an unexpected return to Spanish football, with Málaga in advanced talks to sign the out-of-contract striker, according to Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato.
The 30-year-old has been without a club for two months after his deal with Mexican side CF Monterrey was abruptly terminated in July, three years before it was due to expire in mid-2027. The reasons behind that decision remain unclear, but it has left Martial scrambling for a new home at a critical stage of his career.
“Málaga are in advanced negotiations with Anthony Martial,” Aouna reported on X. “Talks between the two parties are progressing and an agreement is close.”
For Martial, it would be a return to LaLiga and to a stage he once seemed destined to dominate. For Málaga, newly promoted and already under pressure, it could be a gamble they feel they have to take.
Málaga’s struggle, Martial’s slide
Málaga are back in the Spanish top flight after years away, but the reality of life in LaLiga has hit quickly. Three games, three points, 18th in the table. They need goals, experience, and a touch of stardust to steady themselves in the early weeks of the season.
Martial, on paper, still offers all three. A France international with 30 caps, he exploded onto the scene at AS Monaco and earned a blockbuster move to Manchester United, who paid at least €60 million for him. His early days at Old Trafford suggested that fee might even look cheap in time.
It never quite happened.
His development slowed, then stalled. A loan spell at Sevilla failed to revive him. In 2024, with Martial injured and his contract running down, Manchester United cut ties and terminated his deal. Another door closed.
AEK Athens opened the next one. Martial found the net nine times there, but even that return didn’t convince the Greek club to persist with him. They moved him on quickly, and his next stop – Monterrey in Mexico – was supposed to be a fresh start far from the European spotlight.
That, too, fizzled. Twenty matches, one goal, three assists, and then a sudden termination this summer.
A career at the crossroads
Now comes Málaga. A club fighting to stay in LaLiga. A player fighting to stay relevant at the highest level.
The talks, according to Aouna, are moving in the right direction and edging towards an agreement. If the deal goes through, Martial would arrive as both a statement signing and a reclamation project, a reminder of what he once was and a test of whether he can still be that player.
His talent has never really been in doubt. His trajectory has. From Monaco prodigy to Manchester United’s great hope, from Sevilla loanee to short-lived stints in Athens and Mexico, the arc of Martial’s career has bent away from the elite stage he once seemed certain to own.
Málaga, desperate for cutting edge and experience in a brutal league, might just be the club willing to give him one more shot. The question now is simple: if this lifeline is handed to him, can Anthony Martial finally grab it?
