Anthony Gordon Joins Barcelona in £69.3m Transfer

Anthony Gordon’s rise takes its boldest turn yet. The Newcastle United winger has completed a blockbuster move to Barcelona in a deal believed to be worth £69.3m, signing a five-year contract with the La Liga champions.

Both clubs confirmed the transfer on Friday night. Barcelona, in typically grand style, announced that the 25-year-old will wear their colours “for the next five seasons, until June 30, 2031,” hailing an agreement that makes Gordon the latest Englishman to test himself at one of European football’s most demanding stages.

Newcastle, for their part, described the fee only as “significant” as they bid farewell to a player who has become central to their resurgence since arriving from Everton in January 2023 for £40m.

“I was quite lost” – Gordon’s emotional farewell

If the move underlines Gordon’s ambition, his words underline what he leaves behind.

Speaking to Newcastle’s official channels, he cut a reflective, almost raw figure. “I owe this club a lot because, when I arrived, I was quite lost both in life and in football,” he admitted. Newcastle, he said, gave him “a sense of belonging and a sense of identity,” and crucially, the stage he had always believed he was ready for.

“It’s allowed me to do what I always thought I could do,” he said. “It’s put me on the biggest stage and allowed me to perform for the shirt.”

He didn’t just talk about the player he has become, but the person. Over “the last three-and-a-half years” – a period that has taken Newcastle from relegation fears to Champions League nights – Gordon feels he has grown alongside the club.

“It was really important for me to leave this place in a good way because I’ve loved every single minute of being a part of Newcastle United,” he added. “This is an incredible club and one that I’ll never forget. I’ll be a fan for the rest of my life.”

Howe loses a key weapon

For Eddie Howe, the deal cuts both ways. The Newcastle head coach did not hide his disappointment, but he also recognised the scale of the opportunity now in front of his former winger.

The club, he said, are “disappointed to lose Anthony” yet accept that “this is a big opportunity for him”. Gordon has been “a big part of our success in recent years,” a line that rings true for anyone who has watched Newcastle’s high-energy, front-foot football with the England international driving at full-backs and lifting St James’ Park.

Howe’s parting message was generous and pointed towards a bigger stage still. Gordon, he said, leaves with their “best wishes” and he is “confident that he will go on to be a success, both with Barcelona and the national team at this year’s World Cup.”

Barcelona move fast before World Cup duty

Barcelona wasted no time turning agreement into spectacle. Gordon took part in an unveiling event in Spain soon after the announcement, offering the first images of him in blaugrana colours.

The timing is tight. The transfer window does not officially open until 15 June, when the remaining formalities will be processed, but Barcelona pushed to get the deal effectively sealed before Gordon links up with England for World Cup duty on Monday.

For Newcastle, this is the end of a short but vivid chapter. For Barcelona, it is a statement that their rebuild will not be quiet. For Gordon, the question is simple and unforgiving: can he turn promise and Premier League impact into stardom at a club where expectation never sleeps?
