Andre Onana Returns to Trabzonspor Amid Premier League Interest
Andre Onana is heading back to familiar ground, but his name refuses to leave Premier League conversations.
The Cameroon international has officially rejoined Trabzonspor on a second consecutive season-long loan for the 2026-27 campaign. The deal again contains no option to buy, with his parent contract at Manchester United still running until June 2028. United keep their asset; Trabzonspor get their ball-playing No 1 back.
Yet even as he returns to Turkey, Onana’s profile keeps circling England’s elite.
Fortune: Onana still fits the Premier League
Speaking to Premier Bet, Quinton Fortune underlined exactly why top English clubs continue to monitor the 30-year-old. For the former Manchester United midfielder, Onana’s distribution remains his trump card in an era obsessed with building from the back.
"André Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League," Fortune said. "You can see the quality for playing out from the back as many managers now want with their style of football, he can be your starting point."
That “starting point” is a goalkeeper who doesn’t just keep the ball out, but launches attacks with a single swing of his right boot.
"When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference, and he’s one of the best at it," Fortune continued.
The ability is not in question. The mindset, he believes, is where the next battle lies.
"He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it. I hope he can get back to his best because when you need a goalkeeper to play out from the back, he can be outstanding."
So while Onana prepares for another season in the Turkish Super Lig, his name sits on a hypothetical shortlist for clubs like Chelsea, Newcastle and Villa — teams that want their keeper to be a playmaker as much as a shot-stopper.
Chelsea’s new leaders: Welbeck and Henderson
Fortune didn’t stop at goalkeepers. The former South Africa international also weighed in on Chelsea’s summer business, where Xabi Alonso has turned to experience and personality as much as talent.
Alonso has brought in Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, two players with deep Premier League mileage and strong reputations in the dressing room. Those moves struck a nerve at Old Trafford for Fortune.
"Xabi Alonso made some good signings for Chelsea this summer but I wish we could have seen Danny Welbeck return to Manchester United," he admitted to Premier Bet.
For Fortune, the strategy is clear. Alonso wants lieutenants.
"By signing Welbeck and Jordan Henderson he wants to bring in some leaders to set good examples which you need at a club like Chelsea, especially after the experience Alonso had at Real Madrid."
Alonso has seen first-hand what a seasoned core can do inside a superclub. He appears determined to recreate that structure in west London.
"He’s looked at the Chelsea dressing room, felt that it was lacking something, and brought in the players with the right personalities and experience to make a difference in Henderson and Welbeck," Fortune said. "They are not only top, top players but great professionals too."
So as Onana chases confidence and rhythm in Trabzon, Chelsea lean into leadership and know-how under Alonso. One club is banking on character to steady a volatile project. Another, somewhere down the line, may yet decide that a risk-taking goalkeeper with a 60-yard pass is exactly the missing piece.
