Reach that mark again, and the exit route that looked blocked by concrete suddenly becomes far more navigable.
Right now, Barcelona can afford to look relaxed. They have exploded out of the blocks, shredding defences and sitting as Europe’s most prolific side, fuelled by the blistering form of Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. Goals are flowing. The system is humming.
But seasons are long. Legs get heavy. Form dips.
A single injury to either Raphinha or Yamal could flip the picture in an instant and leave Barcelona exposed in the final third. That is where a player like Álvarez changes the equation – a versatile forward who can ease the load on the wingers and offer a different dimension in attack.
For the Blaugrana, lining up a move for Álvarez is not just about January or next summer. It is about insurance, about depth, about having another proven finisher ready when the schedule bites.
The timing, though, is not in their favour. With Atletico’s 20-goal condition in place, a winter transfer sits firmly in the “highly unlikely” column. The club will only seriously revisit his future once this campaign is in the books and the numbers are there in black and white.
Until then, the picture is simple. Álvarez must score. And keep scoring.
Every goal he hits for Simeone’s side this season serves two masters: Atletico’s ambitions now and his own escape clause later. If he reaches that 20-goal threshold yet again, the door to Catalonia will not just creak open.
