Álvarez Rejects Man City and Arsenal as Barcelona Dream Stalls

Julián Álvarez has slammed shut the door on a return to Etihad Stadium, turning down Manchester City before they could even put an offer on the table, according to Cadena SER.

City sounded out Atlético Madrid over the possibility of re-signing their former striker, only to be told the answer from the player was already a firm no. The Premier League champions never got as far as lodging a formal bid; Álvarez made it clear he has no intention of moving back to Manchester.

That refusal drops straight into the middle of the summer’s most stubborn transfer saga. The 26-year-old is locked in a stand-off with Los Rojiblancos, wanted badly by Arsenal, yet seemingly willing to move for only one club.

Arsenal have pushed, and pushed hard. He is described as their primary target, the ideal No 9 for Mikel Arteta’s project in north London. But Álvarez has rejected the Gunners several times, holding his line every time the conversation has come back around to the Emirates.

His mind is set elsewhere.

Barcelona or nowhere

Álvarez is fixated on Barcelona. Earlier in the window, Barça tested Atlético’s resolve with a €100 million (£86m) offer and were sent away empty-handed. The Catalan club have not hidden their intentions since.

President Joan Laporta went public this week, confirming their pursuit and saying it is “common knowledge” that the Argentine wants to join them. The player’s preference is not a secret in Spain’s corridors of power.

But Atlético’s position is just as clear — and far less romantic. The Madrid club have ruled out strengthening a direct rival and have reiterated that there is “zero per cent chance” of selling their star forward to Barça. No negotiating. No compromise. No deal.

So the striker’s dream move is blocked at the source.

England off the table

Álvarez’s resistance to England this time is not about football. Reports in Spain suggest personal and family considerations sit at the heart of his stance. The forward is said to be acutely aware of specific UK visa rules that would make it difficult for his family to visit regularly, an obstacle he does not face in Spain.

It marks a notable shift from his first spell in the country. Signed by City from River Plate for £14m in January 2022, Álvarez adapted quickly, scoring 36 goals in 103 appearances and playing his part in Pep Guardiola’s historic Treble.

Two summers ago, he left for Atlético in an £82m move, swapping Manchester for Madrid at the peak of his City career. Now, with England’s top clubs circling again, he is drawing a hard line.

Cadena SER report that Álvarez has been repeatedly reminded that Arsenal are his only realistic escape route from Atlético this summer. Even so, he remains determined to stay in Spain, clinging to the idea of Barcelona despite the wall in front of him.

Trapped between two refusals

The result is a stalemate with no obvious exit. City have been rebuffed. Arsenal have been turned away. Atlético refuse to even sit down with Barcelona.

Álvarez stands in the middle of it all: a player who will not go back to England, tied to a club that will not sell him to the one team he truly wants.

Unless something cracks — his resolve, Atlético’s stance, or Barça’s finances and strategy — the Argentine may have only two realistic options before the window closes: rebuild a fractured relationship in Madrid, or keep waiting for a breakthrough that might never come.
