Alpha Cisse's Italy Debut Wait Continues Despite Strong Milan Performance

Alpha Cisse has lit up Milan’s season in flashes, but his wait for a senior Italy debut will go on.

The 19-year-old has made a habit of striking in Turin. His first goal for Milan arrived against Torino, the opener of the campaign. Against Juventus, he repeated the trick from almost the same area of the pitch, this time coming off the bench and again finding the net in a high-pressure setting.

Those moments did not go unnoticed. With two caps already for Italy’s U21s, Cisse’s form sparked talk of a fast-track promotion to Roberto Mancini’s senior squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. It would have been a bold signal that Italy were ready to accelerate a generational shift.

That call will not come. Not yet.

MilanNews report that Mancini is following Cisse closely, while technical director Claudio Ranieri also wants more time to monitor his progress. The message is clear: they like what they see, but they are not ready to throw him straight into the Azzurri setup.

Instead, Cisse will remain with the U21s during the international break, where he is expected to feature in their matches against Poland and Armenia. It is a logical step on paper, more minutes and more responsibility in an age group he already knows.

Still, the decision carries a different weight in the current context. An immediate senior call-up would have underlined that Italy are ready to break with old habits, to embrace young form players and shake up the hierarchy. That statement has been postponed, and the sense of a missed opportunity lingers.

Cisse’s time with the Azzurri will almost certainly come. The question is whether Italy can afford to wait as long as they usually do.
