Alejandro Balde has reached the crossroads at Barcelona. The next four months will decide whether he is part of Hansi Flick’s project – or part of the funding for the next one.
A talent on trial
The summer was supposed to bring clarity. Barcelona were open to moving the 22-year-old on, and Manchester United appeared as a serious option. Nothing materialised. No agreement, no exit. Balde stayed at Camp Nou, not as a guaranteed starter, but as a player on probation.
According to SPORT, Flick has already made it clear he expected more from the academy graduate. That message hangs over every training session, every minute on the pitch. Balde is not just chasing game time; he is trying to rebuild trust.
He knows exactly what the coach wants from him. Intensity. Concentration. Reliability. The only place he can answer those demands is on the training ground and in the rare chances he gets during matches.
Blocked path, narrow window
The problem is obvious. Xavi Espart and Joao Cancelo are ahead of him in the pecking order at left-back. They are the ones Flick currently leans on. For Balde, that means the margin for error is tiny. One poor performance, one lapse, and the doubts grow louder.

Balde is still viewed as a valuable piece of business. His transfer value sits in the €30m–€40m range, a significant figure for a club that constantly weighs sporting needs against financial reality.
If he cannot change his situation by January and ends up leaving, Barcelona are ready to accelerate their search for a specialist left-back. That is where Jorge Salinas re-enters the frame.
The Racing Santander defender is already considered one of the leading candidates to strengthen the position if Barcelona decide to act. But Racing have raised his release clause, a move that could push the cost higher and complicate any approach.
So the equation is simple but tense: the less convinced Barcelona are by Balde, the more expensive his potential replacement could become.
