Alejandro Balde's Future at Barcelona: A Challenge Awaits
Alejandro Balde’s future at Barcelona has been thrown wide open in the final days of the summer window, with Manchester United circling and Hansi Flick laying down a blunt challenge in public.
The young left-back is understood to be happy at Barça, but he met with his agent this week to assess his situation. The message from the club is clear: the door is not closed on an exit if Balde believes his role will shrink this season, especially after João Cancelo’s permanent return added yet another layer of competition on the flanks.
Asked directly about Balde in Saturday’s press conference, Flick chose his words carefully but delivered a pointed response.
"It's a difficult question because he's a player of immense quality, and it's important to know if he's confident he can compete in his position. That's what I want to see from all my players. Every day I observe what they do, their level, whether they demonstrate that they're at the level to play. Ultimately, we have to play as a team; only then will we achieve success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent."
He could have offered the standard reassurance, a simple “I love Balde and I’d like him to stay.” He didn’t. Instead, Flick made it clear this is about mentality as much as talent.
The German wants to see whether Balde is ready to stay and scrap for his place, or whether he is prepared to drift on the fringes and wait for minutes to fall his way. That, under Flick, is not an option.
The new coach has hammered home one idea since arriving: every position is up for grabs, every week. If a player is content to be a backup, Barça will not stand in his way.
For Balde, and for any club hoping to prise him away, the message could not be sharper.
