Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future is hanging by a thread.
The 22-year-old left-back has been left out of Barcelona’s squad for Sunday’s trip to Elche, a brutal piece of team news that arrives at the end of a turbulent 48 hours around La Masia’s latest prodigy-turned-first-teamer.
Flick’s challenge, Mendes’ meeting
The week had already felt uneasy. On Thursday, Balde’s agent Jorge Mendes met with Barcelona’s Sporting Director, a summit that immediately raised eyebrows given the defender’s uncertain status under new head coach Hansi Flick.
Then came Flick’s press conference.
Asked directly about Balde, the German did not offer a warm endorsement. Instead, he drew a line in the sand.
"It's a difficult question because he has enormous quality and it's important to know if a player is convinced to be able to compete in his position. That's what I want to see from all my players," Flick said when pressed on the left-back’s situation.
He didn’t stop there.
"Every day I see what the players do - the level - and if they show me that they have the level to play. In the end, we have to play as a team, only then will we have success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent."
For a homegrown player already under scrutiny, those words hit hard.
From “as good as gone” to one last fight?
On Saturday afternoon, Jijantes detonated the story: Balde, they reported, had decided to leave his boyhood club. The suggestion was clear — the defender, once seen as the long-term heir to the left flank, no longer felt fully trusted.
The reaction among Barça fans was instant. A La Masia graduate, a former Spain international, seemingly pushed to the exit door before his prime? It cut deep.
Yet the narrative twisted again before the day was out.
By Saturday evening, Mundo Deportivo reported a different angle: Balde had supposedly taken Flick’s comments as a challenge, not a rejection, and was now willing to stay and fight for his place. The message from his camp was simple — he would compete. But if Barcelona no longer wanted him, he would walk.
Then came the squad list for Elche.
Balde was not on it.
At that point, talk of a theoretical exit started to feel like something far more concrete. With the left-back omitted from the travelling group, his future at the club looks perilously close to the end.

Balde, Made in La Masia and already capped by Spain, still carries the profile that Premier League clubs crave: young, quick, technically clean, and with plenty of time to force his way back into Luis de la Fuente’s plans.

For United, Balde represents opportunity. For Barcelona, he may soon represent a necessary sacrifice.

Balde’s absence also reshapes Flick’s immediate plans.
With the youngster cut from the Elche trip, Jordi Pesquer is now expected to start at left-back, as had already been suggested earlier in the week. It is a significant show of faith in Pesquer and a sharp reminder that under Flick, reputations offer no protection.
On the opposite flank, Joao Cancelo has been named in the squad after completing his permanent move from Al-Hilal. The Portuguese defender may not yet be fully ready to start, but his inclusion underlines a changing full-back hierarchy at the club.
Balde once looked like a cornerstone of Barcelona’s future. Now, as the team boards the bus without him, the question is no longer whether he can win back his place.
