AC Milan Seeks Home Win Against Confident Lecce
AC Milan return to Serie A duty on Monday needing something simple and vital: a home win, a clean sheet, and a reminder of who they are supposed to be this season.
The Europa League opener offered the opposite. A flat 2-0 defeat to Benfica left Ruben Amorim’s side looking short of edge and short of ideas. Europe can wait. The response now has to come at San Siro.
Unbeaten, but restless
On paper, Milan’s league form looks solid enough. They are unbeaten, with two eye-catching draws against Lazio and Juventus already banked.
The reality feels more complicated.
Against Lazio, Milan were 2-0 down inside 39 minutes and staring at a collapse. They clawed it back to 2-2, showing resilience and character that Amorim will cling to this week. That point, and the one taken off Juventus, came on the road. Three of their first four league matches have been away from home. Now, finally, they get another crack at San Siro.
Their only league outing there so far ended in a controlled 2-0 win over Venezia at the end of August. Since then, the momentum has stuttered. Milan have gone three games without a win in all competitions — two draws and that loss in Lisbon — and the need for a statement performance is growing.
Lecce arrive with a spring in their step
Lecce, though, are not travelling north to play the role of sparring partner.
The Giallorossi have started this campaign far better than last season. After four games, they already sit five points better off than at the same stage a year ago. Considering they survived by just four points above the relegation zone last term, that early cushion matters.
Eusebio Di Francesco, who had endured back-to-back relegations with Venezia and Frosinone before stabilising Lecce last season, earned a contract extension for keeping them up. So far, that decision looks justified. His side head to Milan after a 3-2 win over Monza and, crucially, a full week of rest.
Confidence, then, will not be an issue.

History leans heavily towards the Rossoneri. Milan are unbeaten in their last 17 league meetings with Lecce, winning 12 of them. Lecce’s last victory in this fixture came more than 20 years ago. The recent trend is even harsher: Milan have won each of the last three clashes without conceding.

When Milan strike
One trend under Amorim is already crystal clear: Milan are slow starters, fast finishers.
Across their four Serie A games this season, they have yet to score a single first-half goal. All seven of their league strikes have arrived after the interval. Even more specific, 86% of those goals have come between the 60th and 75th minute, a burst of energy just as opponents begin to tire.
Lecce, for their part, have not conceded a second-half goal away from home yet this season. Something has to give.
Backed by the San Siro crowd and driven by the pressure of that three-game winless run, Milan are well placed to extend their habit of growing into matches. The expectation is that their most dangerous spell again comes after the break, with the second half their highest-scoring period.
