Abdelkarim Joins Barcelona's First Team: A Promising Future
Barcelona have wasted no time turning promise into promotion. Abdelkarim is now officially a first-team player.
The Catalan club have registered the 18-year-old forward in their La Liga squad and handed him the No. 29 shirt, a reward for a ruthless pre-season in front of goal. Four strikes in summer friendlies were enough to convince Hansi Flick that the teenager was ready to step up.
That faith showed early. Abdelkarim made the bench for Barcelona’s thumping 5-0 win over Elche on the opening weekend, a statement victory that underlined the depth now at Flick’s disposal.
The Egyptian forward marked the moment in his own way. On his official X account, he wrote: “Praise be to God, I have officially been registered in the first-team squad for the current Spanish League season. Thank you, Coach Hansi Flick, for your trust.” No gloss, no filters. Just a young player fully aware of the size of the step he has taken.
The rise has been rapid. Abdelkarim only arrived from Al Ahly six months ago, yet he already carries the kind of experience most teenagers can only chase. He featured for Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, playing a part in their run to the last 16 before they were knocked out by Argentina. Those minutes on the global stage now feed into his adaptation to life at one of Europe’s most demanding clubs.
For Flick, this is the ideal scenario. He can now shape Abdelkarim’s game from inside the senior setup: sharpen his pressing, tighten his link-up play, harden him physically for the rhythm and collisions of La Liga. Every training session becomes part of the education.
Barcelona’s start to the league campaign gives them room to be smart. A 5-0 opening win allows the coaching staff to embed young talent without panic or shortcuts. The frontline is already stacked, which means there is no need to throw Abdelkarim in before he is ready.
That cuts both ways. The teenager must now live at first-team intensity every day, proving in training that his pre-season form was the beginning, not the peak. His competitive debut is within reach, but it will have to be earned, not gifted.
Barcelona have signalled that they see something special in Abdelkarim. The shirt is his. The stage will follow. How quickly he claims it is now entirely up to him.
