2026 World Cup: Current Third-Place Qualifiers and Round of 32 Match-Ups
The 2026 World Cup group stage is nearly complete, marking the debut of a new round featuring 32 teams. Unlike previous tournaments, the top two from each group will be joined by the eight best third-placed teams, creating a more complex knockout phase. This article keeps you updated on which third-placed teams are currently moving forward and previews their upcoming opponents in the round of 32.
How Third-Place Teams Are Ranked
With 48 teams competing, the knockout stage now includes those finishing third in their groups, ranked externally. The primary factor is points earned during group matches. Ties are broken first by goal difference, then by goals scored, mirroring Bundesliga rules. Fair play points come next: one point deducted per yellow card, three for a yellow-red, four for a straight red, and five if both yellow and red are received in a single game. If teams remain tied, FIFA rankings decide the order.
Possible Round of 32 Opponents and Germany's Chances
There are 495 possible combinations determining which third-placed teams advance. FIFA uses a fixed sequence to manage match-ups, avoiding early rematches between teams from the same group. The bracket lists multiple potential opponents for each third-placed team. Germany might face third-placed teams from Groups A, B, C, D, or F, but they are more likely to encounter teams from Group C or D than from A, B, or F.
