2026 World Cup Knockout Stage: Teams Qualified, Bracket and Schedule Update
The 2026 World Cup has moved into the knockout phase, with several teams already securing their spots in the Round of 32. Co-hosts Mexico and the United States were the first to qualify by winning their initial matches. More teams will soon complete the lineup for this critical stage where every match decides who stays and who leaves.
The group stage involves a round-robin format, but the knockout rounds are single elimination — one loss means the end of the journey.
Current Qualified Teams
Mexico clinched the top spot in Group A after victories in their first two matches, including a key win against South Korea. They will face a third-place team from Groups C, E, F, H, or I in their Round of 32 encounter.
The United States topped Group D, marking their third time finishing first in the group stage and first since 2010. Their next match is scheduled for July 3 against a third-place side from Groups B, E, F, I, or J.
Germany secured their place by winning Group E after a comeback 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast. Their Round of 32 opponent will come from the third-place teams in Groups A, B, C, D, or F.
Argentina booked their spot by beating Austria, with Lionel Messi scoring twice and becoming the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. They topped their group as Algeria defeated Jordan.
France qualified following a 3-0 win over Iraq, with Kylian Mbappe netting two goals. France could still claim the group lead depending on their final group game against Norway.
Norway secured progression with a 3-2 win over Senegal, thanks to two goals from Erling Haaland. The winner between Norway and France will decide Group I’s top spot.
Colombia advanced after Luis Diaz scored a late winner against DR Congo, holding off intense pressure to claim three points.
How the Knockout Format Works
The knockout rounds begin with the Round of 32, where each match is do-or-die. Ties after regulation lead to 30 minutes of extra time. If still tied, penalty shootouts determine who advances. Group winners face runners-up or top third-place finishers from other groups.
Third-Place Qualifiers
The 12 third-place teams from each group are ranked based on points and goal differences. The top eight among them proceed to the knockout rounds, filling out the Round of 32 bracket.
Knockout Stage Tiebreakers
If teams tie on points within groups, these rules apply:
- Head-to-head points among tied teams
- Head-to-head goal difference
- Head-to-head goals scored
- Overall goal difference
- Total goals scored
- Team conduct score (fewer cards is better)
- Higher FIFA World Ranking
Upcoming Round of 32 Matches
The winners from the Round of 32 progress through the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finally the championship match. The schedule is tightly packed from early July, with the final set for Sunday, July 19.
