2026/27 Premier League Matchweek 1 Preview
With the 2026/27 Premier League season finally here, managers are scrambling for clarity and Fantasy Premier League bosses are staring down the 18:30 BST deadline. After a frantic summer of transfers and late fitness calls, the first weekend already feels like a tactical minefield.
Below is how Matchweek 1 is shaping up, club by club, as managers juggle new signings, injury setbacks and selection gambles.
Arsenal v Coventry
Arsenal
Mikel Arteta starts the campaign with one big question: Bruno Guimaraes. The marquee summer signing is a major doubt, but the manager is refusing to rule him out.
"Let's see how it is. He is evolving really well," Arteta said, determined to give the midfielder every possible minute to prove his fitness.
Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are in a far better place. Both are “ready to be involved” after only making the bench in the Community Shield win over Manchester City. Their return to the XI feels almost inevitable.
At the back, Jurrien Timber remains “a few weeks” away and William Saliba is still a long-term absentee, so Arteta’s defensive options are largely unchanged from the end of last season.
Coventry
Frank Lampard’s Premier League return starts with a punch to the gut. Last season’s top scorer Haji Wright is out for up to 12 weeks with a serious quad injury.
“He won’t be available for a little while, he’s got a very serious quad injury which is disappointing for Haji and for us,” Lampard said. “It’s certainly going to be a number of weeks.”
Ellis Simms is expected to step into the No 9 role. Around him, there is cautious optimism. Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni have shaken off pre-season problems and are in contention, but Lampard is unlikely to risk them from the start. Frank Onyeka will go right up to a late fitness test.
Hull v Man Utd
Hull
Hull limp into the opener with a long injury list. Six first‑team players, including Jack Butland and Darko Gyabi, are out until at least next month. Joe Gelhardt’s absence removes a key attacking option.
There is a sliver of relief on the horizon: Hidemasa Morita is due back in training after the Man Utd game, with Cody Drameh expected to join him. That does nothing for this weekend, though.
At centre-back, Charlie Hughes is missing, which leaves a sizeable gap. New signing Nobel Mendy is poised to fill it. Given the circumstances, Hull are likely to stick with the tight, five-at-the-back system that carried them through the playoffs.
Man Utd
Michael Carrick’s pre-season has been encouraging, but his first team sheet of the campaign is still clouded by doubt.
Mason Mount is “touch and go for the weekend,” Carrick admitted, while insisting “there are no dramas” and that the midfielder will not be out for long.
Matthijs De Ligt is back in training but not ready to feature. Benjamin Sesko has also rejoined the squad, yet this match is expected to come too soon for him to start. That leaves Carrick with real decisions to make in attack, with the balance of his forward line still in flux.
Everton v Crystal Palace
Everton
Team news to follow, but the sense is that Sean Dyche will lean heavily on the core that dragged Everton through last season while he waits on late medical reports.
Crystal Palace
Pierre Sage’s first Premier League team sheet hinges on his goalkeeper. Crystal Palace are hopeful Dean Henderson will shake off the ankle twist he suffered in the final pre-season friendly against Freiburg.
“We want him to play,” Sage said. “But we gave him a few days of treatment to allow him to be in his best shape.”
The rest of the squad is available. Jean-Philippe Mateta is back in the mix, though short of full fitness. He is unlikely to start but should make the bench and could be unleashed for a late cameo.
Ipswich v Sunderland
Ipswich
Team news is still to land, with Ipswich holding their cards close ahead of their return to the top flight.
Sunderland
Regis Le Bris walks into Matchweek 1 with almost a full deck. The only absentee is Simon Adingra, who has not fully recovered from an ankle issue.
“We’ll see for the game time because they are not all at the same stage, but they are available,” Le Bris said of the rest of his squad.
New right-back Thomas Meunier had been struggling with back pain, but he trained this week and will be in the squad, with a realistic chance of minutes. Defenders Omar Alderete and Nordi Mukiele also return from injury, giving Sunderland plenty of flexibility in how they set up.
Nott'm Forest v Leeds
Nott'm Forest
Oliver Glasner starts the season without his captain. Ryan Yates has been ruled out after missing the final pre-season friendly against Stade Brestois and failing to recover in time.
He is joined on the sidelines by defender Nicolo Savona, who had surgery at the end of last season and has suffered a minor setback.
“We had to take a step back, so he’s working in the gym again and working on his knee to get back on the grass. I think it will take a couple of weeks,” Glasner explained.
Beyond that, the Forest manager has a full squad to choose from, with all other players available for the matchday group.
Leeds
Daniel Farke’s main dilemma surrounds Noah Okafor. The forward, who finished last season with six goals in his final 10 games, has been back in full training for two weeks.
Even so, Farke is wary. “It’s my responsibility to see if it makes sense and we’ll take some late decisions,” he said.
Willy Gnonto misses out with a hamstring injury. “We hope to have him back in team training soon,” Farke added. Gabriel Gudmundsson is also “still out”. The rest of the squad is fit and ready, leaving Leeds in relatively strong shape despite those absences.
Brentford v Spurs
Bournemouth
Team news is yet to be confirmed, leaving Brentford’s visitors something of a mystery on opening weekend.
Spurs
Roberto De Zerbi’s defensive plans have been ripped up before a ball is kicked. New club captain Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro are both out injured, forcing an early reshuffle.
Archie Gray is expected to step in at right-back, while summer signing Marcos Senesi, recruited from Bournemouth, could go straight into the heart of defence.
In midfield, Pape Matar Sarr is not fit enough to play. De Zerbi can at least lean on his attacking core. James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Mateus Fernandes and Destiny Udogie are all available and should form the spine of Spurs’ front-foot approach.
Brighton v Aston Villa
Brighton
Fabian Hurzeler’s first Premier League team selection comes with complications. Yankuba Minteh is out for at least a couple of weeks, stripping Brighton of a dynamic wide option.
Carlos Baleba, Kaoru Mitoma and Stefanos Tzimas are all doubts and will be assessed closer to Sunday’s kick-off. Their availability could dramatically change the look of Brighton’s XI.
New signing Promise David has a chance to be involved, but most likely from the bench as he eases into English football.
Aston Villa
Team news is still to be announced, with Villa monitoring several players after a demanding pre-season schedule.
Man City v Bournemouth
Man City
No official team news yet, but Pep Guardiola’s selections are always scrutinised heavily, especially on opening weekend when Fantasy teams live or die on his rotation calls.
Bournemouth
Marco Rose’s first competitive match as Bournemouth manager is overshadowed by injuries. Last season’s breakout star Junior Kroupi is out until around November after foot surgery, a huge blow to their attacking threat.
Tyler Adams is being assessed and remains in contention. With Ryan Christie suspended, a space could open in central midfield regardless. David Brooks is also being monitored, leaving Rose with several moving parts as he tries to piece together a balanced side.
Newcastle v Liverpool
Newcastle
Matthias Jaissle must open the season without one of his most influential players. Joelinton is out “for a couple of weeks” and will miss the opener.
“I'm really confident that he will be back as soon as possible," Jaissle said, but that does not help against Liverpool.
Summer signing Aladji Bamba is expected to come into central midfield. On the right side of defence, Amar Dedic, who only just joined the club, could be thrown straight in. “He got some minutes in friendlies there, I am confident that he's ready and we need him," Jaissle said.
Tino Livramento is close to a return but has only taken part in one training session, so he is likely to wait a little longer.
Liverpool
Team news is yet to be released, with the spotlight on how Liverpool’s refreshed squad will line up in one of the toughest away fixtures of the campaign.
Fulham v Chelsea
Fulham
Alvaro Arbeloa’s first Premier League outing as a manager starts with a suspension and a surgery hangover. Defender Joachim Anderson misses the start of the season through suspension, while Tom Cairney is sidelined until October after knee surgery earlier this month.
Even so, Arbeloa has big calls to make across the pitch. Up front, new signing Gonzalo Garcia, brought in from Real Madrid, is expected to start and immediately become the focal point of Fulham’s attack.
Chelsea
Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea debut is framed by careful load management rather than an injury crisis. Danny Welbeck, signed from Brighton this summer, is managing his fitness in training but could still feature from the bench.
“We are expecting him back on Saturday,” Alonso said. “We need to go day by day but that's the plan at the moment."
Jordan Henderson is out until September with a wrist injury. Several players went deep into the World Cup, and Alonso admitted they “may need a bit more time”, but none of them are injured and all are available.
So the curtain rises on 2026/27 with managers juggling late calls, new faces and old problems. The question now is simple: who gets their first big decision right before the whistle even blows?
