World Cup Wins: England, France, Spain, Argentina on FIFA's All-Time List

The World Cup semifinals in 2026 bring together the four highest-ranked teams in the FIFA World Rankings, all of which have claimed the trophy at least once. While a new champion won't be crowned this time, one nation will expand its collection and climb the ranks among World Cup winners.

None of the semifinalists currently lead the all-time list, so here’s a look at the countries with the most World Cup victories and where England, France, Spain, and Argentina stand.

Which Nations Have Won the Most World Cups?

Brazil leads with five titles but is no longer in the tournament. Germany and Italy each hold four championships but were eliminated early this time—Germany in the Round of 32 and Italy missing the last three World Cups entirely.

England’s Place in World Cup History

England's single World Cup triumph came in 1966, an event still cherished by fans. Most current followers have not witnessed England lifting the trophy. Despite reaching semifinals in 1990 and 2018, England hasn’t made it to the final since that 1966 win. The team hopes 2026 can change their luck with two more wins.

France’s Two World Cup Titles

France lifted the trophy twice, in 1998 and 2018. Their first win was on home soil, defeating Brazil in the final. In 2018, they bested Croatia to reclaim the title. Didier Deschamps captained the 1998 side and now manages the team.

Spain’s Single World Cup Victory

Spain has won the World Cup once, in 2010 during the South Africa tournament. With David Villa leading the scoring and Andres Iniesta netting the winning goal in extra time, Spain edged out the Netherlands in a tense final.

Argentina’s Three Championships

Among the 2026 semifinalists, Argentina boasts the most titles with three, including the reigning champions after their dramatic 2022 final victory over France. Their earlier wins came as hosts in 1978 and in 1986, when Diego Maradona dazzled Mexico with five goals en route to the title.
