Updated List of Teams Eliminated from FIFA World Cup 2026
The 2026 FIFA World Cup offers a larger field than ever before, with 48 teams competing instead of the usual 32. This expansion adds another knockout round and increases the chances for many teams to advance beyond the group stage. Still, some nations will face early exits, disappointing their fans and ending their journey sooner than hoped.
Because the tournament now includes more teams, few squads are confirmed eliminated until the final group matches conclude. The top two from each group move forward, along with eight of the best third-place finishers. Those third-place rankings only become clear after all games on matchday three are complete.
By June 23, four teams were officially out of the competition. Here is the list of nations that have already seen their World Cup hopes end this year:
The earliest eliminations include Haiti, Turkey, Ghana, and Tunisia. Their quick exit partly stems from a new tiebreaker rule in the group stage. When teams are level on points, standings are decided by head-to-head records among those tied teams.
For example, Haiti suffered a 1-0 defeat to Scotland in their first match, followed by a 3-0 loss to Brazil. Even if they reach three points later, they cannot surpass Brazil or Morocco in Group C. At best, Haiti could tie with Scotland on points, but Scotland holds the advantage because they won the direct encounter.
World Cup 2026 Group Tiebreaker Rules
FIFA laid out the criteria for breaking ties in April. If two or more teams share the same points total at the group stage's end, these steps determine rankings:
- Head-to-head results between tied teams
- Goal difference in those head-to-head matches
- Goals scored in those head-to-head matches
If teams remain equal, the following come into play:
- Overall goal difference in all group matches
- Total goals scored in all group matches
- Team conduct score, based on yellow and red cards
- Higher position in the most recent FIFA rankings
Advancement of Third-Place Teams
This year’s World Cup allows eight of the best third-place teams across groups to enter the Round of 32. They’re ranked using:
- Points earned in the group stage
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Team conduct score
- FIFA ranking
Expanded Tournament Format
Since 1998, the World Cup featured 32 teams. The 2026 edition expands to 48, adding four extra groups to the opening phase and an additional knockout round. That means the eventual champion will play eight matches, one more than before.
We think this setup gives more nations a chance to shine, but it doesn’t stop some familiar faces from bowing out early. The drama and surprises have already begun.
