World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage: Seeding and Bracket Explained

The 2026 World Cup will feature an expanded knockout stage unlike anything seen before. Hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico, this tournament includes 48 teams, with 32 advancing to the knockout rounds instead of the traditional 16. This expansion means a fresh bracket structure and a new path toward the final.

Who Advances to the Knockout Round?

Thirty-two teams qualify for the knockout phase: the top two teams from each of the 12 groups plus the eight best third-placed teams across all groups. That leaves 16 teams eliminated after the group matches conclude. By June 23, six teams had already secured their spots in the Round of 32:

  • Mexico (Group A) – topped their group first
  • United States (Group D) – victorious over Australia
  • Germany (Group E) – returning to knockouts after earlier exits
  • France (Group I) – defending champions from 2018
  • Argentina (Group J) – current holders led by Lionel Messi
  • Norway (Group I) – back after 28 years away

The rest of the qualifiers will be decided once the group stage ends on June 27, especially the contest for the eight best third-place finishers.

How the Knockout Bracket Is Set

Unlike previous tournaments, the bracket won't be redrawn after the group phase. Teams' finishing positions in their groups determine their exact spot in the knockout bracket, which FIFA sets before the competition starts.

The initial group draw took place in December 2025, placing 48 teams into four pots based on FIFA rankings. The three hosts were seeded at the top of their groups. Pot 1 contained the highest-ranked squads, aiming to separate the strongest sides early on.

Each group winner, runner-up, and qualifying third-place team is assigned to a specific match in the Round of 32. Group winners face theoretically easier opponents as a reward. The eight third-place qualifiers slot in against group winners according to a pre-published FIFA table. No reseeding or redraw happens after the group stage results come in.

Knockout Phase Rules

The knockout rounds follow a single-elimination format. Win the match and advance; lose and go home. Matches tied after 90 minutes extend into 30 minutes of extra time, followed by penalties if needed.

The knockout journey has five stages:

  • Round of 32: 32 teams, 16 matches, 16 advance. This round debuts in 2026.
  • Round of 16: 16 teams, 8 matches.
  • Quarter-finals: 8 teams, 4 matches.
  • Semi-finals: 4 teams, 2 matches.
  • Final and third-place play-off: Winners of semis compete for the trophy, while the losers play for third place.

This amounts to 32 knockout games within a total tournament schedule of 104 matches, adding 40 more games compared to 2022 in Qatar.

Knockout Match Schedule

The final takes place on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM ET. Spanning 16 stadiums across three nations, this World Cup also marks the first time the final will include a live half-time show, adding a new spectacle to the grand event.
