World Cup 2026 Group A: What Are the Advancement Scenarios?

Group A Standings and Upcoming Matches

The opening week of the FIFA 2026 World Cup has concluded with each team having played once. As the tournament moves into the second round of group matches, some teams are already close to securing spots in the knockout stage.

Here’s a look at the current standings for Group A as of June 18, 2026:

Thursday's results included a 1-1 draw between Czechia and South Africa and a 1-0 win by Mexico over South Korea. With that victory, Mexico clinched first place in Group A, guaranteeing a Round of 32 match against a third-place team from Groups C, E, F, H, or I. South Korea remains in contention for advancement.

Remaining Group A Schedule

  • Wednesday, June 24: South Africa vs. South Korea
  • Wednesday, June 24: Czechia vs. Mexico

Advancement Scenarios for Group A Teams

Mexico

Leading Group A with six points and a plus-three goal difference, Mexico secured top spot by defeating South Korea. This guarantees a knockout round matchup against a third-place finisher from certain other groups.

South Korea

South Korea still holds control over their fate. A win against South Africa on June 24 would almost certainly send them through to the Round of 32, especially if combined with favorable results elsewhere.

South Africa

South Africa faces a tough road. If they lose again and South Korea avoids defeat, South Africa will be eliminated regardless of their last match outcome due to tiebreakers and points totals.

Czechia

Czechia must defeat Mexico in their final group game to keep hopes alive. A loss combined with a Mexico win or draw against South Africa would knock them out.

How Tiebreakers Could Decide Advancement

Ties on points among teams will be resolved using a multi-step process. The first step looks at points earned in matches between the tied teams. Then goal difference and goals scored in those specific encounters are considered. If teams remain tied, overall group goal difference and goals scored come next, followed by team conduct scores (yellow/red cards). If still unresolved, FIFA World Rankings will determine placement.

This means head-to-head results carry heavy weight. For example, if Mexico beats South Korea but Czechia wins against South Africa, both Mexico and Czechia could end up with six points. In that case, Czechia could claim first place by virtue of beating Mexico directly.

We think these final games in Group A could create some tense moments. The battle for second place and knockout qualification will likely go down to the wire.
