Usain Bolt Joins Wythenshawe FC Veterans League
Usain Bolt is back on a team sheet – and this time it’s not on a starting block but in a Greater Manchester veterans league.
The eight-time Olympic champion, still the fastest man in history over 100m and 200m, has appeared on the online squad list for Wythenshawe FC Veterans on the Football Association’s Full-Time website, hinting at a remarkable Sunday league cameo.
From Olympic finals to Cheshire Veterans League
Wythenshawe FC Veterans play in the Cheshire Veterans League, but this is no ordinary pub side. The squad is packed with former elite professionals and is managed by ex-Manchester City and Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Ireland.
The roll call reads like a nostalgia hit for Premier League fans. Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Valencia, Joleon Lescott, Emile Heskey, Marc Albrighton, Nedum Onuoha and Papiss Cissé have all turned out for the club. Between them, last season’s Wythenshawe squad had racked up more than 1,800 English top-flight appearances.
Now, at 40, Bolt’s name sits among them.
Bolt’s long flirtation with football
Bolt has never hidden his love for the game. A devoted Manchester United supporter, he chased a professional football dream after retiring from athletics following the 2017 World Championships.
He trained and briefly played for Australian side Central Coast Mariners as he tried to carve out a career in the sport, and he has been a regular attraction in Soccer Aid charity matches over the past decade, using his pace and profile to light up the exhibition stage.
A competitive veterans league in Greater Manchester would be a very different setting – but the idea of the world’s fastest man lining up in a Sunday fixture is exactly the kind of story that grips grassroots football.
For now, Wythenshawe have yet to formally announce Bolt’s signing and have been contacted for comment. The name is on the list. The football world waits to see if the sprint icon actually pulls on the shirt.
