Manchester United's New Era Begins at Hull City
Manchester United step into the new Premier League season at Hull City on Saturday lunchtime, with Michael Carrick beginning his first full campaign as permanent manager under the weight of expectation – and opportunity.
Third place last season restored some pride. A return to the Champions League, after three years away, has raised the bar. Now comes the next test: turning that progress into something more ruthless, starting against newly promoted opposition who will treat this as a free swing.
Carrick cannot afford to see it that way. For United, this is a chance to plant a flag on day one.
Injuries bite, but midfield rebuilt
The squad is not at full strength.
Matthijs de Ligt remains out with a lower back problem, while Manuel Ugarte’s knee injury is likely to rule him out for much of the campaign. Tom Heaton is also unavailable. Mason Mount, who picked up a foot injury in the 1–1 pre-season draw with PSG, faces a late fitness test that will decide whether he even makes the bench.
Benjamin Seško is back in full training after a shin issue, but his involvement is still in doubt. His uncertain status has opened the door for others in attack.
The most striking change comes in central midfield. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are both expected to make their competitive debuts, the heart of a rebuilt engine room.
Santos, a £50m signing from Chelsea, has barely missed a minute. He featured in all six of United’s pre-season friendlies and has looked sharp enough to justify an immediate starting role. Tielemans joined later after helping Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals, yet still completed 90 minutes in the final warm-up game against AC Milan, easing any concerns over his readiness.
If Carrick wants control, progression and composure in possession, this pairing is designed to provide it.
New-look spine, familiar full-backs
At the back, there is change and continuity.
Ayden Heaven is set to partner Harry Maguire in central defence. Lisandro Martínez has managed only around half an hour of pre-season football and is expected to start among the substitutes, with Kobbie Mainoo also likely to be held in reserve.
On the flanks, Carrick sticks with what he trusts. Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw are set to continue at full-back, offering width on the ball and responsibility without it.
Senne Lammens keeps his place in goal, tasked with marshalling a back line that has been tweaked but not torn up.
Fernandes at the heart, Mbeumo to lead the line
Up front, the shape is familiar even if the personnel are not.
Bryan Mbeumo is expected to lead the line after an eye-catching pre-season. With Seško still short of full certainty on fitness, Mbeumo’s form has given Carrick a straightforward call: pick the man in rhythm.
Either side of him, Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha are set to provide the width, both capable of driving inside and interchanging positions. Between them, as always, sits the captain and conductor.
Bruno Fernandes will operate in his customary No 10 role, linking that new-look double pivot with the front three and setting the tempo of United’s attacks. When he plays with freedom, United tend to follow.
Carrick’s likely XI has a clear structure: familiar 4-2-3-1, fresh faces in key zones.
Predicted Manchester United lineup (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Tielemans, Santos; Diallo, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo.
Hull, the cameras, and the clock
The stage is set.
Hull City vs Manchester United kicks off at 12:30 BST on Saturday, 22 August 2026, with the lunchtime slot and live broadcast coverage ensuring every touch will be scrutinised. The game will be shown live in the UK on TNT Sports 1, TNT Sports Ultimate and HBO Max.
A newly promoted side at home. A Champions League club trying to prove it belongs back among the elite. A young manager starting his first full season in charge.
For Carrick and United, this is not just an opening fixture. It is the first verdict on whether last season was a platform – or a ceiling.
