Unai Emery Reflects on Leon Goretzka’s Injury and Looks to Champions League for Aston Villa Revival
Unai Emery, manager of Aston Villa, is grappling with a tough selection dilemma as his team prepares for a crucial Champions League match against Club Brugge. The Premier League side will miss Leon Goretzka due to injury, a significant setback in their midfield options.
Goretzka’s Injury Hampers Villa’s Plans
The absence of the experienced German midfielder, who joined Villa Park on a free transfer after an illustrious career at Bayern Munich, has been a blow. At 31, Goretzka was expected to bring leadership to a midfield reshaped over the summer. Yet, an adverse reaction to intensified training has delayed his debut, forcing Emery to rethink his lineup during a challenging domestic run.
Before the European fixture, Emery admitted the difficulty of losing such an influential player before he has had a chance to contribute on the pitch. He said, “Goretzka’s issue is a bit frustrating, but we have players who can replace him. When he’s back, hopefully he can get consistency in training and playing and we can add his experience. He is a player who will help us in different competitions with the level he has.”
Goretzka Shares Update with Fans
The midfielder took to social media to explain his situation to supporters eager to see him play. He revealed his body struggled to adjust to the increased training load after limited game time near the end of his stint in Germany. The recovery period is expected to last about a month, meaning he will miss matches until after the mid-September international break.
“Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after my time away from the pitch. It’s frustrating, but I need this short break now to come back at full strength. I’ll use the coming days, including the international break, to recover fully,” Goretzka shared.
Champions League Offers a Chance to Reset
Aston Villa started the 2026-27 season poorly, with only one draw and two losses from their first three Premier League games. This form contrasts sharply with the excitement surrounding the end of last season.
Reflecting on recent performances, Emery said, “I think the last match we showed, collectively, some improvements. Our objective at the end of the season was the Premier League, and we are progressing. Still not enough, because we are not getting good results, but tomorrow is a new test, and a new test in Europe. To be here in the Champions League is fantastic, and how we achieved it we can feel proud — finishing fourth in the league and winning in Europe. But it’s a new chapter, completely different. When we started here, our vision had the highest expectation, maybe even not expecting to be in Europe four years in a row, with two in the Champions League.”
Difficult Trip to Bruges Awaits
The upcoming trip to Belgium brings its own challenges and memories. Aston Villa will seek to overcome the sting of a 1-0 loss to Club Brugge in their last encounter in 2024. Emery must manage without injured Goretzka and Johan Manzambi, though Joao Gomes returns from suspension to strengthen the squad.
Club Brugge arrive in strong form, having won four of their first five domestic matches this season.
