Ulinzi Stars Secure Vital Win Over Mathare United

Ulinzi Stars dragged themselves a step clear of the FKF Premier League trapdoor with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mathare United on Saturday, a result that felt bigger than just three points.

The soldiers have been flirting with the relegation zone for weeks. Nerves have been frayed, confidence shaken. This time, though, they held their line. The win lifts them to 15th in the table and, just as importantly, restores a sense of belief inside a dressing room that has been living on the edge.

Assistant coach Mohammed Hassan, better known as “Rio”, did not dress it up.

“The game was not easy. Our plan was to get an early goal but we were not successful in the first half,” he said, summing up a tense opening period in which Ulinzi huffed, pressed, and probed without reward.

The breakthrough had to wait. When it came, it arrived with the urgency of a side that understands the stakes. Ulinzi returned from the interval with greater purpose, pushed higher, and forced the issue. The pressure finally told in the second half as they turned control into goals and, ultimately, into survival fuel.

“We managed to come back strongly in the second half and get the result we wanted,” Rio said, his relief clear.

For Ulinzi, this was about more than tactics. It was about identity.

“This win means a lot to us because we are fighting not to be relegated. I told the players to play for the badge and forget whether they are civilians or soldiers. What matters is fighting for the badge,” he added.

That message cut through. Ulinzi’s players chased lost causes, threw themselves into duels, and defended their lead with the desperation of a team that knows what relegation would mean. The 2-1 scoreline reflected not just their attacking response after the break, but the resilience they showed once Mathare pushed back.

Rio made a point of saluting that mentality. He praised his squad’s determination and resilience under pressure, acknowledging how they stood up when anxiety could easily have taken over.

Upcoming Challenge

The battle, though, is far from over.

Next up is Tusker FC on Wednesday, a different kind of test against seasoned campaigners with ambitions at the other end of the table. Ulinzi cannot afford to treat it as just another fixture.

“We have another tough match on Wednesday against Tusker and we hope to approach it in a different manner,” Rio said, already shifting his gaze to the next fight.

The soldiers have their lifeline. Now they must prove this was not a one-off escape, but the start of a sustained push to stay in the top flight.
