Tottenham Signs Andy Robertson on Free Transfer

Tottenham have moved decisively in the summer market, confirming the signing of Andy Robertson on a free transfer after the defender’s Liverpool contract expired.

The Scotland captain, a serial winner at Anfield and one of the Premier League’s defining full-backs of the last decade, will join Spurs on 1 July. He leaves Liverpool after 378 appearances, a Champions League, a Premier League title and a reputation as one of the most relentless competitors in the modern game.

This move has been months in the making. Robertson was close to a switch to north London in January, only for Liverpool to halt the deal when they failed to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma. The door seemed to close. It never quite did.

Tottenham have changed head coach since then, but the new man in charge, Roberto De Zerbi, needed no persuading. He has pushed the deal over the line and made Robertson one of the first cornerstones of his rebuild.

“Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” De Zerbi said, setting out exactly why this is more than a routine free transfer.

“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”

That is the crux of it for Spurs. They are not just signing a left-back; they are importing a culture. Robertson has lived the demands of title races, Champions League nights and the grind of seasons where every point matters. He arrives with the armband of his country and the scars and medals of a player who has operated at full throttle for club and nation.

For Tottenham, so often accused of lacking that hardened edge at decisive moments, his presence in the dressing room could be as valuable as his delivery from the left flank.

The January near-miss hinted at a club already convinced he was the right fit. Now, with De Zerbi sanctioning the move, Robertson becomes an emblem of what Tottenham want to be under their new manager: aggressive, experienced, unapologetically ambitious.

He walks away from Anfield at the end of his deal, leaving behind an era and walking into a project that demands new leaders. Spurs believe they have just signed one.
