Swansea City Secures Ghanaian Winger Joseph Opoku from Zulte Waregem

Championship side Swansea City have officially acquired 20-year-old Ghanaian winger Joseph Opoku from Belgian club Zulte Waregem. Opoku, who joined the Belgian outfit in 2024, played a key role in their rise to the Belgian Pro League.

The player has committed to a four-year contract with Swansea, who retain the option to extend his stay by an extra year.

Coach Vitor Matos on Opoku's Arrival

"He is a young player who has experienced plenty of senior football in Belgium," said Swans head coach Vitor Matos. "He will adapt well to the physical demands, pace, and volume of games in the Championship because he’s fast and sharp."

Opoku joined the squad during their pre-season tour in Austria, where he completed his first training session with the team.

Progress and International Experience

Last season marked Opoku's breakthrough, with an impressive tally of 10 goals and six assists. He earned his senior Ghana debut during friendlies in May but narrowly missed out on selection for the World Cup after being named in the preliminary squad.

Ben Stevens, Swansea’s sporting director, expressed enthusiasm about the signing: "We’re really excited to have Joseph onboard and look forward to his attacking talents shining under Vitor’s guidance. Two full seasons in Belgium’s top tier and involvement with the Ghana national teams underline his promising ability."

Summer Transfer Activity

Opoku is the fifth player to join Swansea this summer, following the arrivals of Elijah Just, Stephen Welsh, Moussa Yeo, and Leo Walta.
