What Scotland and Brazil Need to Reach World Cup Knockouts from Group C

The hopes of Scotland advancing at the World Cup hang on their final match against Brazil in Miami. After a 1-0 victory over Haiti, Scotland stumbled early against Morocco, conceding within the first 70 seconds to Ismael Saibari’s powerful strike. That loss means Scotland must now avoid defeat or secure a draw against Brazil to progress.

A win for Scotland guarantees passage to the next round and might even see them top the group if Morocco fails to beat Haiti. A draw would likely be enough, pushing Scotland to four points, which generally secures a spot as one of the best third-placed teams. Losing by just one goal could still keep their hopes alive, as a -1 goal difference with three points might suffice to qualify depending on other results.

Brazil’s Requirements to Advance

Brazil, five-time World Cup champions, need to avoid defeat against Scotland to reach the knockout stage. A strong win could help them finish first in the group, building on the goal difference from their previous win over Haiti. Even if Brazil lose, they still stand a good chance of qualifying as one of the top eight third-place teams since they already have four points. To remain in the top two after a loss, they would need Morocco to lose to Haiti, which is unlikely.

Morocco’s Advantage Before Final Match

Morocco hold the strongest position in Group C ahead of their last game against already-eliminated Haiti. Any result will see them through, and a big win could put them atop the group. Should Morocco lose unexpectedly, they would need Scotland to beat Brazil to fall out of the top two. Even then, Morocco’s four points should be enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

How Ties Are Broken

If teams finish level on points, rankings are decided first by head-to-head results between tied teams. For multiple teams tied, only matches involving those teams count, ranking by points, then goal difference, then goals scored. If these don’t separate teams, overall group goal difference and goals scored are considered.

Additional Tie Criteria

If teams remain tied after the above, the Team Conduct Score (fair play) is used. Points are deducted for cards: yellow card -1, red card from two yellows -3, straight red -4, yellow plus straight red -5. The team with fewer deductions ranks higher. If still tied, the FIFA rankings from June determine who advances.

Ranking Third-Place Teams

The top eight third-placed teams advance based on points earned. If more than eight teams share the same points, goal difference decides. Typically, teams with four or more points progress; those with three points must rely on strong goal difference to continue.
