Rodri Stresses Need for Solidity Over Flair as Barcelona Pursues Champions League Glory
Rodri, the recent addition to Barcelona from Manchester City, has shared his thoughts on the club's prospects in the Champions League, emphasizing that a solid tactical approach must come before stylish play if they want to succeed in Europe.
A Pragmatic View on Barcelona's Chances
Since joining Barcelona, Rodri has become a central figure under coach Hansi Flick. After an impressive seven-year stint at Manchester City, where he won four Premier League titles and played a key role in their maiden Champions League victory, Rodri is realistic about the challenges ahead for the Catalan giants. He points out that while winning the tournament is possible, the team is not yet among the favorites and still needs to sharpen several aspects to reclaim the European crown after a 12-year gap.
"Yes, I see it as a title within reach, but it's just one step left to prove ourselves in Europe. We have to understand where we've come from and what it takes to be champions. This team still has things to improve," Rodri explained in an interview with Mundo Deportivo.
The Value of Tactical Maturity
Rodri’s experience under Pep Guardiola, especially scoring the winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final against Inter, informs his view that Barcelona has talent but lacks the necessary experience to handle the pressure of knockout stages. He described the Champions League as a "tournament of moments," where recognizing and controlling these key moments often decides who progresses.
"Players like me come here to grow and contribute the parts needed to win titles like the Champions League, which is not just about being the best but about seizing the right moments," Rodri said.
Learning from Past Errors
Recent Champions League campaigns have exposed Barcelona to defensive errors and tactical lapses, such as their quarter-final exit last season following a red card to Pau Cubarsi. Rodri highlighted the importance of controlling decisive moments—like avoiding unnecessary cards or penalties—and suggested that consistency and solidity might be more valuable than offensive firepower.
"Controlling those crucial moments in ties is key. Sometimes it's better to be less attacking and more consistent and solid," he noted.
Experience as a Stepping Stone
Despite Barcelona's explosive start this season with five straight wins in La Liga and a dominant 5-1 Champions League opener against Feyenoord, Rodri views the team as still learning. He believes that the painful lessons from past defeats will help build the foundation for future success.
"Teams that win have shown that improvement comes through experience. Before winning, you must lose and learn. I've played countless Champions League matches before lifting the trophy, so I know it's a process," Rodri reflected.
