Rashford Takes No9 Shirt as Carrick Era Begins at Manchester United

Manchester United have nailed their colours to the mast before a ball is kicked in the Premier League season – Marcus Rashford is their No9.

The club confirmed the decision ahead of Saturday’s opener away to newly-promoted Hull City, a move that lands like a clear declaration that the England forward will not be leaving Old Trafford before the summer transfer deadline on September 1.

For a player whose United future looked dead and buried not so long ago, it marks a remarkable reset.

From frozen out to leading the line

Rashford’s old No10 shirt disappeared last summer when Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha arrived from Wolves and took it immediately. By then, Rashford had already been pushed to the fringes under former manager Ruben Amorim, shipped out on loan to Barcelona after a spell at Aston Villa and seemingly heading for the exit.

He went from talisman to outcast. From centrepiece to spare part.

At the MKM Stadium on Saturday, the matchday programme initially listed Rashford without a squad number as Michael Carrick prepared for his first Premier League game as United’s permanent manager, a lunchtime kick-off against last season’s Championship play-off winners.

Then came the confirmation: Rashford is United’s new No9.

The shirt carries weight at Old Trafford. Rasmus Hojlund wore it last season before leaving for Napoli, where a loan became a permanent move earlier this summer. Before him, Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Radamel Falcao, Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez and Louis Saha all carried the number.

Now it belongs to a homegrown forward whose United career was thought to be on life support just a few months ago.

A familiar number, a fresh start

Rashford had already stepped back into that role in pre-season. He wore No9 in last weekend’s final warm-up game, a 4-2 defeat to Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan at the Wroclaw Stadium in Poland – his first appearance for United since December 2024.

That outing hinted at a reunion. The official announcement has turned it into a commitment.

It also closes the door on one potential change. There had been talk that Benjamin Sesko might take the No9 this season, but he has chosen to stick with No30.

Around Rashford, the rest of Carrick’s squad is taking shape. New signings Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow will wear 17, 18 and 12 respectively. Fifteen-year-old prodigy JJ Gabriel has been handed 77, while fellow youngster Shea Lacey moves to 31.

Carrick, speaking to TNT Sports before kick-off, played down any grand symbolism in the shirt decision, but not Rashford’s importance.

“I don't think that suggests any more than what the situation is,” he said. “We're delighted to have Marcus back. He's looked fit, sharp and in a really good place. He offers us an awful lot so for sure we are delighted to have him.”

Barcelona pass, United pounce

Rashford’s return to the centre of United’s plans comes after Barcelona chose not to make his loan move permanent in June. The Catalan club declined their £26m option to buy and instead turned to other targets, including his England team-mate Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.

That decision reopened the door at Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old was previously understood to have a clause in his contract allowing any club – except United’s major domestic rivals Liverpool and Manchester City – to sign him for £40m. That clause has now expired.

Rashford, believed to earn around £325,000 a week, is understood to favour staying at United rather than joining another Premier League side. The focus, from his side, is on impressing Carrick, his former team-mate and now the man trusted to revive both the player and the club.

Noise, criticism and a pointed response

The debate around Rashford has rarely been quiet. This week it flared again when Jamie Carragher hit back at Gary Neville for again raising Rashford’s name on the Stick to Football podcast.

The forward responded directly on social media: “Thanks, Jamie. It would be great to be able to get my head down and play football without my name being mentioned every day.”

The No9 shirt will not silence the noise. It will amplify it.

But it also gives Rashford clarity. He is United’s centre-forward again, at least on paper, with a manager publicly backing his fitness, sharpness and mindset.

As Carrick’s reign properly begins on Humberside, one of his biggest calls has already been made. Rashford is not just staying. He’s been handed the most scrutinised shirt in the squad.

Now he has to play like it.
