PSG Moves Ahead for Yan Diomande, Impacting Liverpool's Plans
Paris Saint-Germain have moved to the front of the queue for Yan Diomande – and in doing so may have nudged Bradley Barcola towards the Anfield exit door.
The French champions have now opened talks over a deal for the RB Leipzig winger, with sources indicating Diomande’s camp have informed Liverpool that PSG is his preferred destination if he leaves Germany this summer. For Liverpool, who have spent months positioning themselves as a leading contender, it is a brutal twist.
They had been convinced that if Diomande chose England, he would choose them. They were right about that. What they could not control was the pull of Paris.
Liverpool’s plan unravels
Liverpool have tracked the Ivory Coast star closely since last year, investing time, data, and face-to-face conversations in an attempt to get ahead of Europe’s heavyweights. The club knew exactly what was coming once the World Cup and the summer window collided: a scramble, a bidding war, and the kind of auction they wanted no part of.
That is why they tried to move early.
Last week, the Reds lodged a package worth around €100 million (£86.3m / $114m), a statement offer for a 21-year-old who has quickly become one of Europe’s most coveted wide forwards. Leipzig did not blink. The Bundesliga side have held firm throughout, valuing Diomande closer to €130m (£112.2m / $148.2m) and, crucially, insisting their preference is to keep him for at least one more season before tying him to a new long-term deal.
That stance has not shifted.
What has changed is the temperature of the room. PSG have now formally opened discussions to establish what a deal would look like, and Diomande’s representatives have told Liverpool that, should he leave Leipzig this summer, the Parc des Princes is his priority.
For Liverpool, who had accelerated their efforts precisely to avoid this scenario, it is a significant setback. A move that looked within reach only weeks ago is slipping away.
Campos, contacts and confidence in Paris
Inside PSG, confidence is growing. The club have been buoyed by Diomande’s preference and by the strong relationship between their transfer advisor, Luis Campos, and former Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, now Chairman of the Supervisory Board. Those links have only strengthened belief in Paris that a deal is possible, even with Leipzig holding a hard line on price.
Luis Enrique is a major driving force. He sees Diomande as one of the most thrilling young attacking talents in Europe and is already plotting how to weave him into an evolving front line that has been reshaped again by Goncalo Ramos’ club-record move to AC Milan.
PSG’s pursuit of Diomande, though, will not be painless for everyone inside the dressing room.
Barcola squeezed – and Liverpool watching
Barcola, a France World Cup star, endured a frustrating Champions League run-in, often reduced to cameos from the bench as others were preferred in the biggest moments. Those close to the situation say he has already made it clear he will look to move on if he cannot secure a guaranteed first-team role next season.
Interest in him is already strong across Europe. Diomande’s arrival would only harden Barcola’s stance and increase the likelihood of his departure.
Liverpool are among the clubs circling. They have previously identified Barcola, 23, as a serious alternative to Diomande and are well aware of his valuation, understood to be around €90m (£77.6m / $102.6m). New boss Andoni Iraola is said to “love” the player’s profile – direct, technical, versatile – and Diomande’s tilt towards Paris could hand the Spaniard the opening he has been waiting for.
If Liverpool lose one target to PSG, they may try to prise another away from the French champions.
Four statement signings in PSG’s sights
Diomande is only one piece of a broader PSG rebuild. The club are pushing hard on multiple fronts, and not all of the moves are connected.
Their pursuit of Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche is viewed internally as a separate operation. PSG see Akliouche as the natural successor to Lee Kang-in, who is closing in on a move to Atletico Madrid, rather than a rival for Diomande’s role. Different profile, different plan.
Up front, work continues behind the scenes to reinforce Enrique’s options after Ramos’ departure. Bournemouth striker Eli Junior Kroupi has emerged as a leading name on their shortlist, with discussions and analysis ongoing as PSG look to refresh the attack without losing balance.
The ambition stretches into midfield too. The club believe they are well placed in the race for Lille wonderkid Ayyoub Bouaddi. Lille are open to a sale as long as the deal includes a loan back for the coming season, an arrangement that suits PSG’s long-term planning and their desire to stagger the integration of young talent.
Any move for Bouaddi, though, is likely to hinge on departures. Fabian Ruiz continues to attract interest from around Europe, yet Luis Enrique would prefer to keep the Spain international for at least another year, valuing his experience in what is increasingly a youthful, remodelled squad.
Liverpool left fighting a losing battle?
For Liverpool, the picture is more straightforward and more painful. Their immediate focus remains Diomande. They have invested time, energy and strategic capital in a pursuit that was designed to be decisive, not drawn-out.
They still admire his immense potential. They still see him as a player who could define their next attacking cycle.
But the dynamics have shifted. PSG now hold the player’s preference and have opened talks. Leipzig remain determined to keep him unless their lofty valuation is met in full. The Premier League option that once felt inevitable now looks distant.
Liverpool must decide whether to keep pushing against a door that is closing – or turn fully towards Barcola and test just how far PSG’s summer overhaul is prepared to go.
