Premier League Players Who Scored Hat-Tricks in Losing Matches
Brian Brobbey recently made history by scoring a hat-trick for Sunderland during their 5-3 defeat at Manchester City. This marked only the sixth time since the Premier League began in 1992 that a player scored three goals yet ended up on the losing side.
The last player to do this before Brobbey was Roque Santa Cruz, who netted a hat-trick for Blackburn Rovers in a 5-3 loss against Wigan Athletic back in December 2007. Before that, four other instances all occurred prior to 2000.
- Matt le Tissier: Scored two hat-tricks in losing efforts for Southampton. The first came in May 1993 when they lost 4-3 to Oldham Athletic, and the second in August 1995 during a 4-3 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.
- Dion Dublin: Scored a treble for Coventry City in a 4-3 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday in December 1995.
- Dwight Yorke: Netted three goals for Aston Villa in a 4-3 loss to Newcastle United in September 1996.
