Newcastle United Enter Race for Felix Nmecha
Felix Nmecha’s name keeps circling around the Premier League. Now Newcastle United have stepped into the conversation.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder has already drawn interest from some of England’s biggest clubs, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool all monitoring his situation. Sky Sports now report that Newcastle have joined that group, adding another heavyweight to an increasingly congested chase for the 25-year-old Germany international.
This is not a sudden fascination on Tyneside. Eddie Howe is described as a long-term admirer of Nmecha and, according to the report, seriously considered a move for him in 2023. Newcastle chose a different route at the time, bringing in Sandro Tonali from AC Milan and leaving Nmecha in Dortmund.
That decision may yet be revisited.
The obstacle is clear: money. Sky Sports claim Nmecha’s current Dortmund deal contains an €85 million release clause, a figure that would test even Newcastle’s financial resolve under current spending rules. It would place Nmecha in the very top bracket of midfield transfers, a statement fee for a player still building his reputation at the highest level.
There is another twist. Reports from Germany insist there is no active release clause until 2027, casting doubt over how straightforward any deal would be. If that version holds, Dortmund hold the stronger hand and any club would have to negotiate directly rather than simply trigger a clause.
So the picture is set: a midfielder admired by multiple Premier League giants, a manager who once passed on him now circling back, and a contract situation shrouded in conflicting claims.
If Newcastle decide Nmecha is worth pushing the limits for, the next move will say a lot about how bold they are prepared to be in this window.
