Mourinho Targets Mateus Fernandes for Real Madrid Midfield

José Mourinho has barely arrived at Real Madrid and already a clear idea is forming of what his new midfield should look like. At the heart of it, he wants a familiar profile: young, combative, technically sharp, and with something to prove.

Enter Mateus Fernandes.

The 21-year-old West Ham United midfielder is coming off a standout Premier League campaign, one that showcased his maturity in a struggling side. Across 36 league appearances, Fernandes produced three goals and four assists, but those numbers only tell part of the story. He carried responsibility, drove play from midfield, and often looked like the one player capable of dragging the Hammers up the pitch.

It was not enough.

West Ham still slid through the trapdoor, condemned to a season in the Championship in 2026/27. Relegation tends to trigger an exodus, and Fernandes sits right at the top of the list of likely departures. At his age, with his trajectory, a year outside the top flight feels improbable.

That is where Mourinho comes in.

According to Diario AS, the incoming Real Madrid coach has already submitted a list of transfer targets to the club hierarchy, and Mateus Fernandes is on it. The report is blunt about the Portuguese coach’s stance: Mourinho wants him, and Madrid have started to move to satisfy their new manager.

For Real, the attraction is obvious. A 21-year-old with a full Premier League season behind him, tested in adversity, capable of contributing in both directions. For Fernandes, the leap from a relegated West Ham to the Bernabéu would be seismic, but it aligns with the way Europe’s elite now hunt value — striking early, before a player’s price soars beyond reach.

The path will not be clear. Arsenal and Liverpool are also credited with strong interest in the West Ham standout, setting up a potential three-way battle between two Premier League heavyweights and a Real Madrid side reshaping under one of the most demanding managers in the game.

West Ham’s relegation has opened the door. Mourinho, typically, is trying to walk through it first.
