Mason Greenwood on Brink of Fenerbahce Move Amid Manchester United Interest
Manchester United will be watching the next few weeks of Mason Greenwood’s career with unusual interest – and not just out of curiosity about an academy graduate rebuilding his reputation abroad.
There is serious money on the line.
United inserted a hefty 40 per cent sell-on clause when Greenwood left Old Trafford for Marseille in a £26 million deal in 2024. Now, with the forward seemingly on the brink of another move, that decision could pay off handsomely.
From Old Trafford exile to Marseille resurgence
Greenwood’s time in France has been anything but quiet. Removed from the picture at United, he has rebuilt his career at Marseille with the kind of numbers that inevitably draw attention from Europe’s elite.
Sixteen goals and seven assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances last season told their own story. He carried a threat, found rhythm, and reminded clubs across the continent why he had once been viewed as one of the most gifted finishers to come out of Carrington in years.
Marseille, though, failed to secure Champions League football. That failure has shifted the landscape. A player entering his prime, producing at that level, is unlikely to stand still for long.
Roma, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus have all been linked, each monitoring a situation that has been bubbling since spring. But the most concrete noise right now is coming from Turkey.
Fenerbahce make their move
Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi has gone public. Not with a tease, but with a declaration.
“We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood,” he said, confirming that personal terms have been agreed with the 24-year-old. In his eyes, this is a statement signing, a marquee promise delivered.
“He has proven himself at the highest level of European football. He has agreed to join Fenerbahçe during the most valuable and productive years of his career.
“I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise.”
The message from Safi is clear: this is the kind of deal that can shape an election campaign and a club’s short-term future. But one major hurdle remains.
Marseille hold the cards – and United stand to gain
For all the noise in Istanbul, Fenerbahce still need to satisfy Marseille.
Reports suggest the French club want around £47.5 million for Greenwood. At that price, United’s 40 per cent sell-on clause becomes hugely significant. If it applies to the full fee, the Manchester club would be in line for roughly £19 million – a substantial windfall for a player they no longer employ.
In an era of tight financial controls and scrutiny over spending, that kind of unexpected injection could influence United’s own summer plans. They will not dictate Greenwood’s destination, but they have every reason to keep a close eye on how hard Marseille push in negotiations and how far Fenerbahce are willing to stretch.
Inside the French club, the situation is being handled with care. Sporting director Gregory Lorenzi laid out the stance in an interview with L’Equipe.
“He [Greenwood] is one of the players that we are really thinking about [with regard to] their future. If an opportunity presents itself, naturally, we will think about it.
“But there is the club's position [and] that of the player. It is also up to us to manage internally to find the best possible solution for all parties.”
Those lines underline the balancing act. Marseille know Greenwood is an asset at peak value. The player knows this is a crucial step in his career. Buying clubs sense an opening.
United, for once, sit on the sidelines – no say in the sporting decision, but a major stake in the outcome. If Fenerbahce turn agreement on personal terms into a completed transfer, the next chapter of Greenwood’s career will unfold in Istanbul, and a sizeable cheque will quietly arrive in Manchester.
How aggressively Marseille hold their ground on that fee may decide just how big that cheque is.
