Manchester United Target Youri Tielemans for Midfield Overhaul
Manchester United are moving decisively in the market, with the club in advanced talks to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after indicating they are ready to trigger the Belgian’s £35 million release clause, sources have told ESPN.
The 29-year-old has emerged as a central piece of United’s summer rebuild. Villa would prefer to keep him at Villa Park after three influential seasons, but Tielemans has signalled that the chance to move to Old Trafford is one he wants to take.
A Europa League winner last season and a mainstay of Unai Emery’s side, Tielemans has rebuilt his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most reliable midfield operators. His form for Belgium has matched that level: he scored twice in the dramatic 3-2 World Cup round-of-32 victory over Senegal, underlining his ability to shape big games from the centre of the pitch.
At United, he is not arriving alone. He is set to join Andrey Santos as part of a sweeping reshuffle in midfield. A £50m agreement with Chelsea is already in place for the Brazilian, with both clubs now working through the final formalities before confirming the transfer. The plan is clear: fresh legs, fresh ideas, and more control in the middle of the pitch.
The rebuild does not stop there. In goal, United are close to securing Karl Darlow from Leeds United. The experienced goalkeeper is being lined up to push current No. 1 Senne Lammens, adding competition rather than simple cover in a position the club cannot afford to neglect.
One deal, though, has stalled. United are currently not pushing ahead with a move for Atalanta midfielder Éderson, despite a £35m fee having been agreed with the Italian club before the World Cup. Talks have cooled and the transfer is “not moving forward” at this stage, according to sources.
United have not disclosed what has complicated the pursuit of the Brazil international, and crucially, they have not closed the door on the move entirely. The option to revive discussions later in the summer remains on the table.
For now, the focus is on Tielemans, Santos and Darlow. If United get those over the line, the shape of their new spine will be clear long before the season starts.
