Manchester United Hosts Sabah for a Historic Champions League Encounter
On Thursday evening, Manchester United will host Sabah at Old Trafford as the Champions League returns to the iconic stadium for the first time since 2023. This fixture marks the initial meeting between these two clubs, with Sabah being a relatively young team founded in 2017.
Historic Matchup
The upcoming game is notable because it's the first time Manchester United will face a team from Azerbaijan. While Qarabağ FK has been Azerbaijan's most prominent club in European competitions, reaching the Champions League knockout stages last season before a heavy aggregate defeat to Newcastle United, Sabah is making their debut beyond qualifying rounds in European football, having participated previously in the Conference and Europa Leagues.
Champions League Debutants in the United Squad
Since Manchester United last played in the Champions League during a 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in December 2023, several players are set to experience the competition for the first time. Key players like forward Bryan Mbeumo and goalkeeper Senne Lammens have yet to play in this tournament. Defender Leny Yoro will also make his Champions League debut, having only competed in the Conference League with LOSC Lille and the Europa League with United in his initial season.
Michael Carrick's Unblemished European Record
As a player, Michael Carrick enjoyed considerable success in the Champions League, winning the trophy in 2008 and reaching finals in 2009 and 2011 with United. His managerial experience in Europe is limited but flawless; during his caretaker stint in 2021, he led the team to a critical 2-0 away victory against Villarreal. This match will also be significant as it marks Carrick's first European home game as United's manager.
