Manchester United Overhaul Midfield: Ederson and Mateus Fernandes Set to Join

Manchester United are preparing to tear up the heart of their midfield and build something younger, sharper and far more aggressive in its place.

Casemiro is on his way out, Manuel Ugarte is up for sale, and United are moving quickly to land Ederson from Atalanta and Mateus Fernandes from West Ham in what amounts to a full-scale reset in the centre of the pitch.

Casemiro out, Ugarte next – and a rebuild begins

United have chosen not to renew Casemiro’s contract, allowing the Brazilian to leave on a free transfer this summer. He has been excellent this season, a genuine leader in a turbulent side, but at 34 the club has decided the next cycle cannot be built around him.

Ugarte is expected to follow. Signed for £50.5 million, he has not justified that fee, and United are now preparing to cash in and cut their losses. Two big earners, two big decisions. Both pointing in the same direction: this midfield is being stripped back.

Those exits demand more than a minor tweak. They force a rebuild.

Ederson deal advances

The first major piece looks set to be Ederson.

talkSPORT report that United are “closing in” on a deal with Atalanta for the Brazilian, in a transfer that could rise to around £43m. Negotiations with the Italian club are already at an advanced stage and, crucially, Ederson has given the move the green light.

He is ready to sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford, a commitment that underlines how central United see him to the next phase of the project. The expectation is that Ederson will be the first new midfielder through the door.

And once that domino falls, United intend to keep going.

United push ahead for Mateus Fernandes

Attention is already trained on Mateus Fernandes, one of the standout young talents in West Ham’s squad and a player attracting serious interest across Europe.

According to CaughtOffside, United now “lead the race” for the 21-year-old and have emerged as the “strongest contenders” after accelerating talks with his representatives. While several heavyweights are circling, United have done the most groundwork and are trying to turn that head start into a deal.

Arsenal like him and have identified Fernandes as a possible replacement for Christian Norgaard. Chelsea, Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are also monitoring his situation. This is not a quiet chase.

The pressure, though, is on those clubs to catch up. United are in pole position, helped by two powerful pulls: the chance to play alongside compatriot Bruno Fernandes, and the lure of Champions League football in a red shirt.

The younger Fernandes is understood to be keen on both.

Relegation shifts the numbers

Earlier suggestions put his price as high as £80m, a figure that would have tested even United’s resolve. West Ham’s relegation has changed the landscape.

CaughtOffside now claim Fernandes is available in the €50-60m range, roughly £43-52m. For a player with his ceiling, that bracket looks far more realistic for a club determined to lower the age profile of its midfield without sacrificing quality.

United are expected to make a serious move for Fernandes once the Ederson deal is tied up. The plan is clear: secure the Brazilian from Atalanta, then push hard to bring the Portuguese playmaker in behind him.

A possible third signing

The shake-up might not stop at two.

According to the Daily Mail’s Manchester United correspondent Chris Wheeler, the club are also planning a £20m move for another midfield option, with Southampton’s Shea Charles on their list.

If finances allow, United could emerge from this window with three new midfielders, a completely different look and feel to the department that has been anchored by Casemiro and weighed down by Ugarte’s struggles.

Old stalwarts out, younger legs in, a core rebuilt almost overnight. The question now is not whether United are committed to changing their midfield, but just how radical they are prepared to be before the new season kicks off.
