Manchester United Eye Manu Kone After Tchouameni Commitment

Manchester United are preparing to turn a setback in Spain into an opportunity in Rome.

Their long-running admiration for Manu Kone has moved back to the forefront after Aurelien Tchouameni shut the door on a Premier League move by committing his future to Real Madrid.

Tchouameni dream fades

At Old Trafford, Tchouameni had been viewed as the ideal heir to Casemiro. He had already taken the Brazilian’s place at the Bernabeu in 2022, and United’s hierarchy saw him as the “dream target” to anchor their next midfield.

There was genuine belief that Madrid might cash in. The European champions have been heavily linked with big-ticket midfield additions such as Rodri and Enzo Fernandez, and a sizeable sale would have helped bankroll any such move.

That possibility vanished after talks with Jose Mourinho, who is set for a dramatic return to the Madrid dugout 13 years after his first spell. Following those conversations, Tchouameni agreed a new deal and nailed himself to the club’s long-term plans.

Behind the scenes, there is a feeling that his agent – who also represents Kone – allowed United’s interest to grow to strengthen his client’s negotiating position in Spain. Even so, reputable voices insist a transfer could genuinely have happened if Madrid had been willing to sell.

They weren’t. So United have had to look elsewhere.

Spotlight swings to Rome

The logical next step lies with a familiar name and a familiar representative. Kone, Tchouameni’s teammate in France’s World Cup squad and a client of the same agent, has now emerged as a serious candidate to reinforce Michael Carrick’s midfield.

According to TEAMtalk, United are “plotting a move” after being made aware of Roma’s valuation: around £50 million for the 25-year-old.

Roma’s stance is shaped by numbers as much as tactics. I Giallorossi secured a comfortable third-place finish in Serie A and a return to the Champions League, but that achievement does not erase their financial realities. The club needs to raise funds to stay on the right side of UEFA’s regulations, and internally Kone is viewed as their most valuable saleable asset.

Sources cited in the report suggest intermediaries have already sounded out several English heavyweights. Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been contacted as potential landing spots.

Kone, for his part, is understood to be open to the move. Previous reporting has described him as “very keen” on joining United, a stance that fits neatly with INEOS’ search for a dynamic, long-term midfield presence.

Built for England

On the pitch, Kone offers a profile tailor-made for the Premier League. He is a powerful, combative midfielder who relishes duels, yet he carries the ball with purpose and stride, driving his team up the pitch rather than simply recycling possession.

His performances at the World Cup only sharpened that image. Standing at 6'1", he showcased the blend of athleticism and technical quality that has attracted scouts from across Europe. Those displays did more than just pad a reputation; they presented him as a midfielder capable of operating at the very highest level.

One moment in particular will not have gone unnoticed at Old Trafford. In France’s 3-0 win over Iraq in the group stage, Kone started in place of the injured Tchouameni, who missed out with an adductor problem. Didier Deschamps turned to Kone as the natural replacement for Madrid’s midfield lynchpin.

United appear to be following the same logic.

INEOS weigh up options

INEOS, now driving football operations at Old Trafford, have also been made aware of another high-profile name: Eduardo Camavinga. The Madrid midfielder is believed to be available, yet the preference, according to TEAMtalk, is to push harder for Kone as a “serious option” to reshape Carrick’s engine room.

The reasoning is clear. Kone is entering his prime years, hungry for a step up, and available at a price that, while significant, sits below the eye-watering sums demanded for established Premier League stars.

Roma’s need to sell, United’s need to rebuild and Kone’s appetite for England are aligning at the same moment.

Tchouameni may have slipped away, but the next phase of United’s midfield rebuild could yet be defined by another Frenchman – this time in red, not white.
