Liverpool Refuses Bayern's Approach for Untouchable Rio Ngumoha
Bayern Munich thought they had found a hidden gem. Liverpool have made it clear he’s going nowhere.
On a frantic Friday of briefings and counter-briefings, Rio Ngumoha – a 17-year-old winger who has quietly become one of Liverpool’s most prized prospects – moved from “secret candidate” to the centre of a tug-of-war between two European giants. Only one of them ever looked willing to blink.
Bayern’s secret plan comes to light
The story first surfaced when David Ornstein reported that Bayern were actively exploring a move for Ngumoha. The teenager, already regarded inside Anfield as one of the standout young talents in the Premier League, had emerged as a primary target for the German champions on the left flank.
Ornstein detailed that Bayern viewed Ngumoha as their main option for that side and that the player was aware of their interest. There had been no contact between the clubs, but Liverpool’s stance was already firm: not for sale. The message from Anfield was that they intend to strengthen their attack, not chip away at it.
The plot thickened minutes later. Florian Plettenberg revealed that this wasn’t a tentative enquiry from Bavaria; Bayern had been working on Ngumoha for weeks. According to his report, they reached a full verbal agreement with the player and his camp on 26 May, with Vincent Kompany personally speaking to the youngster and signing off the move.
Ngumoha, Plettenberg said, had been Bayern’s “secret candidate” – an absolute priority as back-up to Luis Díaz on the left wing, running alongside their pursuit of Anthony Gordon. The groundwork was done. The plan was in place.
Then it collapsed.
Plettenberg stated that the deal fell apart on Thursday “for the time being”, with Bayern now having to see whether they can make progress on other targets such as Brown or Saibari. The Kompany-approved move for Liverpool’s teenager had hit a wall.

If there was any doubt about Liverpool’s position, Fabrizio Romano removed it. The transfer specialist reported that the club have considered Ngumoha “untouchable” for months and that there is “no chance” of an exit this summer.
Inside Liverpool, the 17-year-old is seen as a crucial part of the long-term project. At a time when elite clubs scour Europe for the next great wide forward, the view at Anfield is that they already have one developing in-house – and they are not about to hand him over to a direct Champions League rival.
This is not a case of a late change of heart or a reaction to Bayern’s interest suddenly going public. Romano’s line underlined that the stance has been consistent: Ngumoha is off limits.
A statement beyond one teenager
For Bayern, the failed pursuit is a reminder that the old dynamics have shifted. The days when they could quietly move for a Premier League club’s emerging star and expect a deal to be smoothed over are gone. For Liverpool, this is something else entirely: a declaration about where their future lies.
Ngumoha has yet to make himself a household name, but those inside the club speak of a winger with the kind of explosive potential that shapes recruitment plans. Keeping him is not just about blocking Bayern; it is about protecting a blueprint for the next era of Liverpool’s attack.
Bayern will move on to other names. Liverpool, by contrast, have made theirs. Rio Ngumoha stays – and the message to Europe is unmistakable.
