Kylian Mbappé Dominates World Cup with Goals and Assists
Kylian Mbappé has taken hold of this World Cup the way great players are supposed to: by bending the numbers to his will.
On Friday, the Real Madrid forward climbed alone to the top of the goal-contribution charts at this summer’s tournament, his latest performance for France adding another layer to a campaign already heavy with end product.
Didier Deschamps’ side are in the thick of their final group game, a potentially awkward meeting with a dangerous Norway team. Mbappé, of course, started. He led the line as the sharp point of Les Bleus’ attack, the reference for every French surge into the final third.
The goals had already been flowing. Four in France’s opening two matches in North America announced that Mbappé had arrived at this World Cup in full scoring mode, the kind of ruthless streak that turns group stages into personal showcases.
This time, though, he chose a different weapon.
Rather than hunting his own hat-trick, Mbappé slipped into the role of creator, carving Norway open and serving up two goals for Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembélé. The understanding between the pair, on this stage, felt almost casual. One burst of acceleration, one perfectly weighted pass, and Dembélé did the rest. Then they did it again.
The pressure finally told on the numbers. With those two assists, Mbappé moved clear at the top of the combined goals-and-assists table for the tournament. Six direct goal involvements now sit beside his name.
That tally nudges him past Argentina icon Lionel Messi and his Real Madrid teammate Vinícius Jr., both already in strong form but, for the moment, looking up at the Frenchman.
The group stage is still being written, the knockout rounds yet to bare their teeth, but the leaderboard has a new, familiar face at the summit. The question now is simple: can anyone catch Kylian Mbappé?
