Italy’s 2006 World Cup Champions Look Back After Two Decades

Two decades have passed since Italy secured their fourth FIFA World Cup in Berlin. On this anniversary, many of the players from that victorious squad shared their memories and emotions about that unforgettable day.

A Dramatic Final Against France

The final was a tense battle between Italy and France, ultimately decided by a penalty shootout. France ended extra time with ten men after captain Zinedine Zidane was sent off in the 110th minute for headbutting Marco Materazzi. Fabio Grosso became the hero by scoring the winning penalty that sealed Italy’s victory.

Throughout the tournament, Italy conceded just two goals: one was an own goal, and the other came from a penalty kick. Remarkably, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon did not allow a single goal from open play.

Players Remember the Triumph

The 2006 World Cup team forged a close bond through their journey to the title, earning lasting admiration in Italian soccer circles.

Defender Gianluca Zambrotta described the win as an unforgettable highlight of his life and career, saying, "It was a tremendous joy, obviously, and it’s something that I remember every day. It’s something that will stay with me for the rest of my life."

Marco Materazzi, who scored the equalizer in the first half of the final, revisited Berlin 20 years later, sharing on Instagram, "The stairs, the corner of my goal, the penalty spot, it’s all still there. The greatest day of my life. July 9, 2006. It feels like yesterday."

Fabio Cannavaro, the team captain, posted a video with a simple but powerful caption: "Twenty years ago today. Always ❤️." Similarly, Andrea Pirlo wrote, "So we don’t forget. 20 years ago ❤️," while Alessandro Del Piero urged, "Finish what you started. Campioni del Mondo."

Buffon’s Tribute to His Teammates and Nation

Gianluigi Buffon shared a moving message for his former teammates, expressing pride in their achievement and the honor of representing Italy.

"There are days that don’t belong only to those who lived them. They belong to an entire nation. July 9, 2006, is one of those days. 20 years later, that memory is just as powerful: the embrace of an extraordinary team, the joy of millions of Italians, the pride of wearing that shirt and writing a page of history together."

He acknowledged the national team's struggles in recent years but emphasized his unwavering support.

"Our love for the Azzurri never changes, and it never fades. It’s a bond that endures through time, through victories, disappointments, and fresh starts. Thank you to my teammates, the staff, and all the Italians who dreamed with us. That night will forever remain one of the greatest chapters in our history. And it will continue to remind us what it means to represent Italy."
