Harry Kane Embraces Life at Bayern Munich, Closes Premier League Door

Harry Kane has drawn a clear line under the idea of a Premier League homecoming, admitting the “itch” to return to England has faded as he settles into life at Bayern Munich.

The England captain, still widely regarded as one of the game’s elite centre-forwards alongside Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, left Tottenham for Bavaria in 2023 and has done exactly what Bayern expected: score relentlessly. He has ripped through Bundesliga backlines and carried that form into Europe, with 33 goals in 38 Champions League appearances for the German giants.

For years, the narrative around Kane was unfinished business in England. He walked away from the Premier League with 213 goals, leaving Alan Shearer’s record of 260 still intact and giving the Newcastle legend a little breathing space. Only Wayne Rooney, on 208, has also broken the 200-goal barrier in the Premier League era.

That history, and that record, meant a return always felt possible. Tottenham never fully closed the book on their all-time leading scorer, and Manchester United have long admired him. Recently, both clubs were again linked with a move.

TEAMtalk reported last week that United and Spurs were prepared to test Bayern’s resolve this summer. Tottenham, under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi, were said to be open to a spectacular reunion, banking on the emotional pull of bringing their record marksman back to north London. United’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is known to be an admirer and was described as willing to explore a deal.

The market noise grew louder when news emerged of Kane’s representatives holding talks with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. A blockbuster offer from Saudi Arabia would not have surprised anyone in the current landscape.

Yet the momentum has swung back towards Munich. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has indicated the most likely outcome is Kane signing a new contract at Bayern, and the player’s own words now back that up.

Speaking after receiving the European Golden Shoe, in quotes carried by journalist Henry Winter, Kane laid out his thinking and, in the process, shut down the immediate prospect of a Premier League return.

“When I first left, for sure it was something that I thought I’d definitely be coming back. That itch isn’t there as much anymore,” he said.

“I’m extremely happy here in Munich. It’s opened my eyes to a totally different world of football outside of England. It’s made me appreciate European football even more.

“With the team we have here, with the manager (Vincent Kompany). My family are really settled here. It’s just about being in the best place possible.

“I never say never but, for now, I’m concentrating on Bayern Munich and we’ll see what the future holds.”

Those lines land like a firm answer for Manchester United and Tottenham. The door is not bolted forever, but it is certainly not ajar for this summer. Kane sounds like a player who has embraced a new chapter rather than one plotting a route back to old ground.

The Premier League record that once looked like his destiny may now depend on whether his Bayern project ever truly feels complete.
