Germany's Defensive Woes Overshadow Leroy Sane's Bright Start in Loss to Ecuador
Germany showed attacking ambition but revealed serious defensive weaknesses in their final World Cup group match, losing 2-1 to a determined Ecuador side. Leroy Sane scored early for Germany, but the team conceded twice and never mounted a strong comeback. Although Germany finished top of the group, they head into the knockout stage on a disappointing note.
An Early Goal Followed by Defensive Struggles
The game began quickly for Germany, aided by some luck. After Ecuador’s throw-in, Alex Pavlovic won the ball but accidentally struck Pedro Vite in the face during his clearance. The loose ball was picked up by Florian Wirtz, who set up Sane to score. Despite protests from Ecuador, the goal stood.
"When you have such a good start and take the lead, you have to focus on the spaces. Today we lost control a little bit after we took the lead," said coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Ecuador responded with determination. Nilson Angulo leveled the score with a powerful shot from outside the box, marking Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament. The remainder of the first half became a battle of tackles and pressure, but few clear chances emerged.
Second Half Shift and Ecuador’s Winning Goal
The second half started with a potential penalty shout for Germany when Kai Havertz went down in the box, but the referee ruled out the call due to a foul earlier in the buildup. From there, Ecuador took control. They needed a win to advance and showed the urgency of their task, energized by a supportive crowd.
Ecuador’s second goal came through a header by Kevin Rodriguez, who outjumped Jonathan Tah. Then Gonzalo Plata extended, poking the ball past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to send Ecuador fans into celebration.
"Life is about learning how to suffer and having faith, belief, poise, and confidence. In adversity, we stay calm and work with a plan," said Ecuador manager Sebastian Beccacece.
Germany attempted to rally, but Nagelsmann had already rotated many starters. The substitutes showed effort but lacked creativity. This loss was unexpected given Germany’s approach and lineup, making the defeat sting more.
"Defeat is never good, even when you’ve secured the group win. We’ll learn and move forward," Nagelsmann added.
