Georgia Stanway Set to Join Arsenal on Free Transfer
Georgia Stanway is set to return to English football at the peak of her powers, with Arsenal poised to sign the England midfielder on a free transfer from Bayern Munich at the start of July.
The deal is agreed in principle and will be completed once the 27-year-old passes a medical, clearing the way for one of the most complete central midfielders in the game to walk into Jonas Eidevall’s squad just as her contract in Germany expires.
A serial winner, changing leagues not standards
Bayern signalled Stanway’s departure back in January, confirming she would leave at the end of her deal after four trophy-laden years. She arrived as a statement signing and leaves as a cornerstone of a dominant side, having helped Bayern to four Frauen Bundesliga titles.
Her impact in Germany went well beyond medals. Stanway became a leader in Munich, a driving force in midfield and a fan favourite. Bayern’s director of women’s football, Bianca Rech, highlighted her “commitment and character” and admitted she had “stolen our hearts”, while accepting that the midfielder wanted a new challenge.
That next step is Arsenal – and it comes with serious expectations.
England’s heartbeat heads to north London
For club and country, Stanway has built a reputation as a midfielder who shapes big games rather than merely appears in them. She has 91 caps for England and 32 goals, a remarkable return for a central midfielder, and has been central to the Lionesses’ modern era of success.
She drove England to back-to-back European titles and into the 2023 World Cup final, operating with the blend of aggression, intelligence and technical quality that top sides build around. Arsenal are not simply signing depth; they are importing a standard-setter.
The London club have tracked Stanway for several years and had her firmly on their list before last season’s Champions League final triumph. This is not a reactive move. It is succession planning with teeth, aimed squarely at ending their wait for a Women’s Super League crown that stretches back to 2019.
Rebuilding the core
Arsenal’s midfield is undergoing a controlled but significant reshaping. The club have already confirmed a series of high-profile summer exits: Beth Mead, Katie McCabe, Victoria Pelova, Laia Codina and goalkeepers Manuela Zinsberger and Naomi Williams will all leave.
That kind of churn demands clarity of vision. Stanway’s arrival is one part of the answer. Another is close.
Arsenal are on the verge of finalising a deal for Géraldine Reuteler, who is also available on a free after leaving Eintracht Frankfurt. The Switzerland international offers a different profile to Stanway but the same top-level pedigree. An attacking midfielder who can step into the front line, she has delivered 54 goals and 45 assists in 184 appearances for Frankfurt, including 10 goals this season alone.
Reuteler was one of the standout performers for the host nation at last summer’s European Championship, a tournament that underlined her ability to influence games in the final third. With her and Stanway in the same squad, Arsenal would add both incision and control in key areas of the pitch.
A new spine for another title push
Arsenal’s pursuit of Stanway predates their recent European success and speaks to a broader ambition: to build a side that can dominate domestically while staying at the sharp end in Europe.
Stanway brings Champions League experience, a winning mentality and the kind of competitive edge that can tilt tight title races. Reuteler, if and when her signing is completed, adds creativity and end product around the box.
The overhaul is bold. The intent is obvious. Arsenal are not just replacing names on a squad list; they are attempting to construct a new core.
Now the question is simple: with Stanway at the heart of it, can that new core finally drag the WSL trophy back to north London?
